My re-gear experience
As I have posted in the past I feel that the stock 993 gearbox leaves the car woefully anemic especially when engaging second but then 3rd and 4th also. Cutting to the chase after a lot of research and help from Mike at Paul Guard Gears I changed 2,3 &4 targeting a drop in RPM of no more 1500 RPM between gears. So peaking at 6700 RPM I now shift well into the power curve so the car literally launches when I throw it into second, 3rd and 4th. The shift from 4th to 5th is hardly noticeable as any different because a drop of only 2000rpm.
I feel like for $6k I have a new car that is sooooo much fun to drive on the road. 2nd peaks out at 55mph instead of 70, 3rd at 85 instead of 100 and 4th 120 instead of 140. The 2000rpm gap to 5th is not excessive since it grabs 5th at 4500rpm. (I have all of Guards computer models)
As to the naysayers who insist that the stock gearbox will bring the car to to top speed in less time, I can't respond, but so far I have never had the car near that. But if ya wanna go the 1/4 this friday, I got my pink and anyone without this mod is gonna end up handing me theirs. I only wish I had done this earlier.

I don't think acceleration trough gears is much improved but acceleration in gear is definately from another planet and thus it also feels a lot faster.
Then, take it to the track and it'll blow away a US spec 993 with stock gearing.
I love my 993 with the close ratio box!!!

ANSWERS: I had the transmission rebuilt with the new gears. There is no lag into 4th cause it is closer also. The only spot that might be a little wide is into 5th but I drive 9o% on the street and like to stay out of jail, so lag above 100mph is not a concern. As to the comment that tork in gear is greater than at shift, that is gravy, but where the problem came for me was the first to second shift. No matter how tight I wound it, my car would bog down in second, unless I let the clutch slip instead of grabbing the gear. Now when I hit second and even third the car squats and leaps which was not happening before. SPending the $$$ was not easy for me but after a few hours of driving it home from San Fran to Bend Oregon I was just tickled. Try smiling for 8 hours straight. It almost hurts! As to why I went to RMG in Sunnyvale to have it done, I will tell that story if you are interested.

Damned stock class rules, hmm? You just need a car for "fun private days" and then another (or two or three) for wheel-to-wheel. Oh, and %^$&& TIME to actually get to the track!
But anyway, yeah the regeared yellow car is just sooooooooooo nice.

Well, yeah, sorta....... We're talking about club racing; and at least from my vantage point out my way when we used to run them, it's a pretty mellow experience. Running around the paddock looking for the tech people from National to figure out a guy's gearing would be more trouble than it's worth. Kinda comes down to what kind of person you are. And as I said above, in racing of ANY kind.......well, it's not like the amateur kid at the Masters last Friday who called the penalty on himself, thus missing the cut.

I agree about the 1-2 shift in a stock 993. Driving several back to back with 964s - and the 964 just rips through first and second like a psychopath compared to a 993. Not saying 993 is slower (lest I upset anyone) but the 1-2 in it is totally lame to me, comparatively speaking.

the 993 curb wt is listed @3031 964 @ 2976, ~1.8% difference
hp 271 vs 250, for a min ~8.4% 993 advantage
and
comparing the g50/03 used on all RoW 964 and US '90-91 to a g50/20 used on all US n/a 993 2w/d
speed in gear
g50/03 40 68
g50/20 37 69
the US993 is geared ~8% lower in (better acceleration) & ~1% taller in 2 (slightly worse for acceleration)

I would agree that 2nd gear on the 993 is weak. Daily driving 2nd gear acceleration from lower RPM is Toyota Corolla weak!
But don't the 993 engines have more torque/power at the higher rpm range? My former 964 seems to putter out at 5500 whereas the 993 is still going strong.
