Default What's the current going rate for a steering rack?

All of the sudden and out of the blue, my steering rack started leaking. A few days ago, I heard the pump grinding during left hand turns. I checked underneath the front of the car for any fluid leaks but it was dry. I refilled it with fluid, and the noise went away for a day. The next morning I had a puddle of fluid on my garage floor right under the rack between the front wheel. So, the rack needs to be replaced.

My Indy wants $817 for a ZF unit and $350 for the install, which is not bad as I as I thought of DIY this but for $350 I may let him do it. I'll have to get an alignment after it is replaced.

Does the $800 price reasonable or in line with what others have paid?

On his estimate, the remanufactured ZF rack has a 993 part. is this the same as the stock rack? What is the consensus on what rack to use?

Thanks!

I don't know enough to know who actually rebuilt the rack - or does that mean that ZF rebuilt it?
That price is not unreasonable, I have heard others say they've gotten racks for less. I got one rebuilt by Griffith's in the same price range and have had no problems with it; been about 20 K miles or so since installing.

Sergio,

A quick search on Pelican Parts shows part number 993-347-011-X-M103 - Power Steering Rack, Rebuilt, 993 Carrera/Carrera 4 (1995-98) - $1092.50

Sunset or Suncoast may be able to do better than Pelican, but at $817 parts and $350 labor, you can almost get the rack replaced for Pelican's parts prices.

Thanks guys.

Dave, yes, it is the ZF remanufactured unit which is the OEM supplier according to Pelican.

Terry, I just checked the estimate and it has the same 993 part number that you posted from Pelican. Thanks for checking it out for me. Pelican prices are not the lowest out there but it is a great refernce point.

I wonder if I should also replace the tie-rods while I'm in there...here I go on the slippery slope...

Tie rods, good point. Wish I had done mine. They make a little 'clink' noise when I turn at low speed.

I'll have them check them and if they don't break the bank I might as well just replace them. After 12 years, if they are not toast by now, they are for sure getting there.

Just looking at the receipts from my car done in 05-2007. Steering rack was $777.49 and the two tie rods were $354.51 and $380 for all labor. Then, $178 for the alignment. This was a reputable shop in Central NJ.

No part number on the invoice, but it does say "remanufactured by Porsche".

This clink in my own opinion is not the tie-rods, it is your steering column rod...
check the TSB's

Thanks! That's reassuring...sounds pretty much in line with my quote.

For another data point, I bought a rebuilt one from Power Steering Pros. I paid about $380 for it I think and received it the following day after ordering (they shipped within 4 hours of placing the order).

It was packed well and looked very good. Same markings and part numbers as the unit I removed. Also came with the proper dust boots to complete the installation.

About 1 year and 10,000 miles later is is still working flawlessly.

Wow...that's one heck of a deal. How long is their warranty for?
