Default Metal part on Air Filter Cover

My cover does not have this metal part. I just noticed this during my 30k service... I called sunset and they said I have to buy the entire air filter cover p/n 993 110 030 56. Does anyone know if I can purchase this separately?
Thanks

Yes, it is the "Motor Sound" Air box cover. Don't know if the trim ring is available separately...haven't seen it. Might be nice to have for a little bling in the engine room. Mebbe a CF one would be cool.

Or you can drill it out yourself. Are you after the chrome or the sound?

Derek,

That is part of the optional motor sound airbox assembly. Check your options sheet to see if your car came with that option.

Derek,
Save your money. I have both covers and the intake 'trumpets' are identical - save for the chromed plastic version you reference. The 'Motorsound' cover has a series of small holes for a bit more intake sound.

Derek,

You do have to order the motor sound airbox cover to get the drilled holes and chrome trim; Sunset is a good place to get it from and their price with discount is pretty good. I decided to get this for my car; no extra HP but engine note is better at higher RPMs and it looks nice cosmetically.

David

Thanks guys for the clarification. I'll have to verify as I thought my car has the motorsound option but doesn't. I just noticed the plastic vs chrome trim.... I'll double-check my options sheet.

David, looks like I may also be purchasing the motor sound airbox considering I don't have it. Sunset seems to have the best price.

Think I'll experiment with drilling additional holes in my existing airbox.

If you are planning to drill holes you might do a search as another lister may have posted a Word template with hole layout that matches the motor sound airbox cover (at least I thought I saw a reference to this at some point).

David

David,
The stock covers already have the pattern molded in - no need for a paper template...

just drill some holes in an artistic and pleasing pattern, then paint the plastic ring a "horsepower positive" color.

Chrome ? It's just painted plastic !

Reminds me I wanted to check if the fake chrome part can be swapped with the original black one. Too much bling for me.

I'm not sure if it can be disassembled.

Yes, just depress the tabs and slide the trumpet out.

Andreas,

Thanks for the tip on the airbox cover holes; I must admit that I never looked closely at the stock cover.

Didn't the "Motorsound" option include the airbox cover, chrome exhaust tips and special mufflers? I didn't know you could get the airbox cover by itself.

I bought a spare cover on eBay and made a Supercup style cover by cutting off the top of it with a Dremel tool, leaving just the frame. No HP benefit, but definitely a better sound at high RPM. Not for use in the rain, though (entire air filter is exposed).
