...would have tried Redline before but was advised against it from a Porsche mechanic who also builds Porsche race cars...said Redline creates a yellow powder on the gears and shafts etc...making it a real bitch to clean during a re-build...any comments?....Steve Wienier??..
That sucks. I will try the NS and report back.

A little update on my transmission. In May 08, it popped out of 5th, and repeated that behavior every time it was shifted into 5th. My favorite shop did the repair, and found that the shift fork pinch bolt was not correctly torqued, probably from the factory, "While we were in there", 5/6 shift sleeve and all synchros were replaced, for a total of $2500. This was at 40,000 miles. The shop commented that the clutch still looked new.

One trick to help the grinding when shifting from 1st to 2nd when the tranny is cold:
Park the car with the tranny in 2nd gear.
It forces the oil out of the 2nd gearset apparently, and it responds better during the first few shifts, .and by then things are warming up in there.

Changed to Redline 75-90 NS - much better
I just changed my transmission fluid from the Mobil 1 to Redline 75-90 NS. While the temps are in the 70s here now, and it may be different with cooler temperatures, I did notice a significant reduction in the 1st to 2nd gear grinding immediately.
The tranny took all 4 quarts with nothing running out of the fill hole when I removed the "oil bong" I made from a length of clear plastic tubing.
BTW, the Redline fluid is clear in color and has no sulfur smell.

I had a similar improvement with redline 75-90 NS. I've tried a number of gear oils over the last 3 years to help with notchy shifting in 1 and 2. The redline works best for me. It did not eliminate the problem by far but a sifnificant improvement.

That mechanic was only partially correct and his statement lacked context,.....
Using Redline GL-4 lubes such as MTL & MTL-90 can attack the brass syncros and create some of that mess in the transmission. Such lubricants are totally inappropriate for ANY Porsche transmission as these all require a GL-5 to protect the ring & pinion gears.
75w-90, the NS product, or even Shockproof (racing only) is OK as these are all GL-5's.

FWIW, this thread caught my eye since I just had my tranny oil replaced with a service last weekend.
My mechanic suggested using Mobil 1 replacing the Swepco that was in there. I noticed an immediate improvement in gear changes when cold shifting from 1st to 2nd and 2nd to 3rd. Not perfect, but certainly better than it was.

To think that all this time I was thinking I was going to be up for big bucks to have my gearbox repaired. I'm ordering some of this oil tomorrow first thing.
