How do you get out of paying ad valorem tax? I know that there is some type of timing issue if you buy a car in your birthday month, etc (maybe I am wrong) where you don't have to pay your ad valorem, but am unsure of it all.

Can someone enlighten me?

If you buy from a dealership, you're screwed. I found that out the hard way. Go to http://motor.etax.dor.ga.gov/motor/r...toregister.asp

The new rule went into effect Jan 1, 2006, and I bought my car that April...the only way I reconcile myself is that car was The One for me. I've not seen one before or since that I would have preferred (and I'm always looking).

My birthday is Dec 26. I bought a used Audi on Dec 31 and didn't have to pay ad valorem for 2007.

I was told that if you buy after your birthday, you don't have to pay it for that year.

Default GA AD VAL

You don't need to pay it on a car purchased 60 days prior to your birthday. Anytime after your birthdate you pay it on the following birthday. I believe that is how it works.

Yeah, we've got it here in Kentucky. Pretty much sucks when I'm paying hundreds of dollars each vehicle, each year to renew my tags and my buddys across the river in Ohio are paying $35 or $40 to renew theirs...

Yeap...it sucks big time. The worst part is that the due date is your birthdate. So every year part of my birthday presnt is to go to the fricking DMV and pay over $1,300 in Ad valorem tax to renew my tags for our 3 cars and bike.

The ad valorem on my car dropped $70 this year, though. That was kinda cool.

I know this isn't going to be a popular statement but to me, the ad valorem tax on autos is one of the more fair taxes we have. The reason I think this is because people do have a choice regarding what type of car they drive.

My wife and I drive the 993, an Acura, a Volvo and a Ford Ranger, but if I really don't like the advalorem tax, I'm free to buy a $2000 Civic and a $2000 pick-up and get along fine and only pay about $100 per year for tags.

What chaps my *** is the income taxes we pay for busting our assess, getting an education (Which we paid for) and becoming reasonably successful only to give a pile of it back to the idiots in Washington and Atlanta that are (1) concerned about steroids in pro baseball (Who gives a ****?...Let the rich ******** poison themselves and die), (2) Spent state dollars to vote on whether there should be a college national championship playoff (All because their precious Bulldogs got shut out of the whatever bowl to play for #1), (3) Spent state funds discussing and voting on something regarding Vince frickin' Dooley ( Who somehow thinks he's owed something by the State of Georgia) (4) Have spent untold hours and funds debating whether Georgia should allow University of Florida tags to be sold to UF fans in Georgia because Florida doesn't allow georgia tags....

WHAT THE FU*K!!!!!!

Oh...Sorry...Um...Well...I do feel better now.

We could start a very large thread abou tall the stupid crap that our tax dollars are spent on and I suspect that discussion would eventually turn into a political/socialogical one HOWEVER

I am sure you fellow Atlantans (I have been here 28 years) all remember the hubub around 400 and all the BS about the "toll road".. personally I think we shoudl have a few more of those around here.. for instance.. we could use another north/south expressway/lane into the Perimeter from the North or an outer beltway arc north of town and make the damn things toll roads..

traffic here blows and there is no relief unless you drive at odd hours.. and road tolls are a form of "use tax" which is easier to swallow IMHO.

Not trying to start a sheet storm here but after re-locating to 20 miles north of the perimeter OMG traffic sucks!
