Motor sound airbox cover or not?
Which do you think sounds better, a motor sound airbox cover or a filter assy without any cover at all? I've got a carbon fiber airbox (basically a filter holder) now and I'm wondering if my car will sound better with the perforated airbox cover. Thanks.

Fit on the after-market "cover" is notoriously poor and there isn't any benefit in HP or sonics. Motorsound cover is ~$80. Or, you can chop up your OEM cover any way you want for $0. A quick search will reveal what others have done.

Have had all sorts of iterations.... Regular cover, regular cover with a few holes drilled in it, Fabspeed cover, regular cover that is somewhere between a Fabspeed and one with a few holes drilled. I'm the most happy with the last option on my 993. I have a cat bypass and maxflo mufflers and with the fabspeed cover it was far more obnoxious than it is now. I also have the cold air intake on it too as I have a fixed rear spoiler.

I've just fitted a home made version of the motorsound to my car , I'm very happy with the cheap mod. You really do only notice the difference when accelerating at full throttle ... There's a much fuller sound with more of a 'bassier' overtone than before.
I went the cautious route and bought an oem airbox filter cover on ebay for $10 so I could butcher it and then return to my original part if I made a mess of the mod or just plain didn't like the sound.
Btw , it would have been a lot less work to just cut 6-8 bloody great holes on the lid , but I was afraid of getting rain water in thru larger holes , seeing as the car is sitting on a driveway here in sunny Dublin

just my 2 cents..... But I think the sound of the open airbox is great. But my gut feeling (no real data to back this up) is that the stock opening flows PLENTY of air so there is no real benefit of opening it up more. What you do end up doing is pulling in warmer (less dense) air. For a net loss of .0000001 hp. If you have a fixed wing, you can install the turbo intake snorkle(?) to get more cooler air and pick-up .0000001 hp.
again just my 2 cents (maybe less)

Thanks guys. I found an old cover that I'm going to hack up and see if there is a difference between that and my Fabspeed cover (which is actually not a cover at all). I'm not worried about rain as it never ever (OK once or twice) sees rain. I have Maxflow mufflers on the car which sound great. I used to have CAT by-pass pipes on the car but I had to put the CAT back to pass NJ inpspection and decided to leave it on. BTW I have one set of Gillette style Fabspeed bypass pipes for sale. Only 5K miles on them and they are $250 + shipping ($500 new).

I posted the same question a few months back.
I went with drilling some holes in the stock air box and love the sound. As for the extra power...thats probably just in my head. Here are some of the pictures from that thread.

I drilled the airbox on my 964 and loved the deep, rumbling growl it emitted when accelerating hard.
However, on long drives on German highways it became very tiring to listen to.
So, I reverted to the stock set-up.
But, it sure did sound good though....
