You can also shut off X band detection. The majority of door openers are on X and the majority of police don't use that band anyway. Really cuts down on the false alarms. And as dhicks said, logic mode works well too.

In NJ, most local police cars have always-on X-band blazing away in the windshield so it's very useful there.

There should be a federal law that ALL police cars need to emit a unique signal at all times.

After my second speeding ticket recently I purchased a 9500i Escort with GPS. I am very happy with it and locking out false signals is really nice. Stongly recommended.

I haven't used my V1 in over a year. It made me a neurotic, paranoid driver with all the falses it gave out, and it didn't prevent me from getting two whopping tickets, either. Both times it damn near jumped off the windshield when the laser pegged it, but it was too late by then.

I don't worry too much about the falsing. In the ten years that I've had my V1 (think it's paid for itself?), I have maybe used the filtering feature once or twice. I'd rather put up with the false alarms and have full sensitivity. Out here, police use K band, so it's really obvious when they're spraying the area. I've also beaten instant-on radar by having my left foot over the brake and wonder if the filtering would have afforded me the same level of warning.

V1 is great for radar, but absolutely useless for laser. And that's no exaggeration. I've NEVER gotten any laser warning until I'm getting nailed directly, in any of our cars.

So if you live in a laser state (e.g. Ohio, Wisc., etc.) it's mostly a waste of money and can cost you a lot more due to the false sense of security.

Thanks for all of your feedback. My car has a pigtail for one and was debating whether or not to install one as I now have an opportunity to get one of their "latest and greatest".

Our state troopers in Washington State have a couple of aircraft now equipped with FLIR making it a bit more of a challenge for "spirited" driving.

But, it should be able to hopefully detect if someone ahead of you gets hit with the laser, right?

+1 for the V1. on my second unit now, bought it when they 1st came out before laser, they took my old one back and gave me a credit for it on a new one(like 4 years later). Agreed the warnings can be annoying, but the filters work well and can be programmed to come on automatically every time you turn it on. had the passport before that, V1 definitely better.

No; that's exactly the problem. With laser, the beam that's emitted is very precise, with little extra scatter and little detectable reflections. So there's really nothing to pick up unless you're right in the signal path or very close. Radar guns, OTOH, spray radar signal everywhere and the signal reflects all over -- that's why radar detectors work well.

The way the NY State trooper explained the laser to me....after smirking and asking me how my V1 works -

"Your chances of beating the laser are equal to your chances of shutting the lights out in your bedroom and being under the covers before it's dark in the room"

Pretty much summed it all up for me.

I have a laser jammer on the front that will block and scatter the laser signals. Mine works! Not that I really speed more than 10-15 over the limit on highways. I had a cop nail me with the laser gun about a year ago, he clearly didn't get a reading and I could see him reset and fire again as I went by.

Check out radarbusters.com no affil etc, blah, blah. I do have his stealth coatings (veil) on the headlamps

Exactly. I don't get the complaining about the V1's effectiveness against laser. It's no worse than anything else. That's like being upset your car can't do Mach 2. It's simply the nature of the beast...
