I may be in the market for a 993 later in the year. I'm also looking at the new 1 series Bimmer, but the 993 has always been my first love. What kinds of things should I be on the lookout for? Any problems that tend to be consistent throughout? Are wide bodies an option or only available on certain cars? TIA!
Hi Michelle!! Welcome to the dark side...
Take your time and drive as many different variety 993s as you can find. Once you decide what you want, start your search. It took me about a year to find my car - I'm kinda picky and there wasn't a whole lot to choose from around here at the time.
If you find anything in the St. Louis area, I'd be more than happy to look at it for you (as I have for other Rlers).
Feel free to PM me if you have specific questions.

The "wide body" cars are specific to the Carrera 4S (all wheel drive) and
Carrera S (2 wheel drive, often referred to as the 2S). The most notorius
issue is probably the dreaded secondary air injection malfuction (SAI) and
resulting CEL (check engine light) which will cause the car to fail inspection
in most states. Many threads on this subject. Be sure to get a pre-purchase
inspection before any purchase. There are other issues to look for which
others know more about than me.

+1 Although I love my 993 I still miss my 944-and not even a 951. They are very different animals and there is a joy in learning to drive the 993. Even though I am a Gator I wish you success and happiness in your search-but the signature Icon will have to go.
Al
Hopefully you will be keeping that 951 also! Very nice.

doesn't Parktown Porsche still have the Arena/Cashmere turbo in their inventory?
Just a follow up to what Gordo said...there isn't much to test drive around me at all...I'm hoping more will come available in the spring too.

Wide bodies are the "S" (2S and 4S) and "Turbo" models. Narrow bodies are everything else (C2, C4, Cab, Targa, RS)

I actually have a BA from UF - my JD is from FSU.
Thanx for the heads up!
Here's a place that currently has a few in inventory www.holtmotorsports.com . No affiliation, etc.

Don't be in a rush, and don't jump on any hidden lemon's on the quest to get THE car you're looking for. When I bought mine, I was also in the running for an Arena Red (the best ever) S type 993. The search took me several months, and I just couldn't find the right car with that color combo etc. I ended up getting a black C4s with a black and silver interior that is kick ***. Just saying, don't limit yourself, there are plenty of good cars out there.
Also, have you picked up Peter Zimmermann's "The Used 911 story" book? It was a great reference. It breaks down the model into its years - breaking down issues each particular year had etc... It even provides tell tale signs to look for during your purchase. Great reference to start with anyway. Good luck with your search and hope you find your perfect AR w/ Cash. int. beauty.
