How hard is it to change a light grey full leather interior to black...dash, door panels, seats, etc.? Can it be done to a high standard via dyeing or does one have to swap out all the grey for black.
What would one budget for this?

If you feel flush, there's an entire full-leather interior from a Turbo in the Pano classifieds. I think the seller has run the same ad for nearly a year, and wants $5,500 for the lot.

Certainly not the most economical route...

Between what it would cost to do the job correctly, and the depreciation you would suffer for changing the origionalty of the car, you would be better off selling one and buying what you realy want. IMHO

Just to respond to your PM:

I didn't do any dying since I went from black to gray. Do a search, since people have dyed things black. Might search for Surflex too. Many have used Surflex, but I don't think it would work well on an area that gets touched a lot, like the seats and upper door sills.

I'd also recommend Rob Budd at The 928 Leather Shop. He covered my upper and lower dash in leather and it turned out amazing. Very reasonable prices too.

Power and performance mods on this car cost $60,000-plus, while the miles, history, cosmetic condition, and ownership/provenence are top-notch, so it's hard to pass on the car because of a less-than-perfect interior color that could be changed for, I hope, $4-5000. It's an opportunity to upgrade the steering wheel (3-spoke) and seats (Recaros), which would cost $$$ anyways.
I am a complete heretic as regards the maintaining-of-originality-for-value religion is concerned, although I respect that perspective and know that I don't set the market with my opinions. I just think that the collective wisdom of the Rennlist takes our street Porsches to a higher level than the factory did.

Eric is right. I changed the interior color of my car from blue to black. The seats were swapped for black ones. The dash, console, doors, steering wheel and many other parts were done with Sulflex. For the most part I am happy with the results. However, it can wear off in time in some areas. I would not recommend it for seats.

As far as resell, I too believe it would hurt resell. Since I tend to keep cars for a long time and want them the way I want them, I never consider resale in my decisions. Good luck....

Chuck is right. Surflex is good, but will wear in places. I dyed my blue carpet with good results, but finally went with the RS carpet kit and RS door panel. I still keep the blue dash and trim pieces to contrast to contrast the black ones. Here is a poor picture. I'll probably take nicer ones once everything is complete.

BTW, I have enough pieces left over from the project to make a RS rear deck/seat delete kit. Anyone interested?

Ithatch,

I hate my light grey...it does not wear well IMO as it shows everything.

Ive been slowly switching pieces to black since my dash was already black and I think the 2 tone look of the grey/black actually looks pretty good....top door panels done, mats done, next seats and ultimately the carpet. if budget/time is an issue you might do it over time.
