OT: Thoughts on Maserati Quattroporte?
Anyone have any ownership experience of recent model Quattroportes?
Or any thoughts on input to purchase decsions, specific to Maserati ownership?
A friend considering....
Thanks!

Don't know about the newest models , but my neighbour had a '04 one , and it gave him loads of trouble. I'd regularly see the low loader outside his house (as in every other month)
I believe electrics and gearbox were the biggest problems.
A relation had a 4200 spider , which had the same F1 style gearbox , and yes he too had various problems with it refusing to go into gear etc.
It also depreciated like a mad thing... This issue may be different over in the USA though.

I live near the dealership where we see both Maserati and Ferraris come and go. Their latest offerings are built a whole lot better than the days of the Bi-turbo. Fit and finish on the cars are quite good. The only concern I would have myself is, the relatively limited numbers of maintenance repair facilities outside of the dealership network, and you would hope these cars are better in terms of serviceability than the Ferrari, as it never seems to fail, my friends who own Ferraris, always kid about how difficult it is to sit after taking their cars in for service.

Great looking, terrible and I mean TERRIBLE depreciation. Further, I'd have nightmares wondering what the servicing costs for these beauties might be over an extended period. The transmission was a pain, but I think they finally worked it out with the 2007 and newer cars.

The new gear box is the only one to buy, and it is completely different in both driving and maintenance. The depreciation in the first year or two is a free fall, all due to the legendary problems with the old gear box. A used '07 could be a decent buy, as they have many remedies included and will have suffered $30-$40k depreciation!

Wondering if similar tranny problems also plagued the regular 6-speed gearbox as well or only the dual clutch SMG or whatever they call it. Perhaps an earlier Maser (2002-2005) with the traditional 6-speed might be the answer...?

The normal 6 sp M/T is only available on the Coupe or Spider.
The Q Ports first came with the Cambio (computer controlled clutch) and were just introduced with the real automatic transmission.
The real auto seems to be more appropriate for this car.

I test drove a 06 Cambriocorsa (I don't think I spelled that right) coupe a couple of years ago and that thing drove like s***! Although I did not use the paddle shifters the shifting was aweful. It did have a nice sound to it and the interior was one of of the nicest.
