Console Cup
Under $30 from Sunset:
964-552-159-00 Console Cup
993-552-091-00 Rubber Mat
999-591-349-02 Speednut (two needed)
N 013-958-14 Screw 3.5 (two needed)
You will need a Phillips head screw driver and two minutes to do this. The hardest part is getting into the back seat to take the old cassette holder out!
Edit: To clarify, the old unit uses one screw and speednut. The new cup insert uses two but on a different bracket. If you order the cup and mat, order the screws and speednuts (which cost pennies each). If you didn't order them any hardware store can provided them. I'll post additional photos to show this.

I have the same tray and love it. Since my car doesn't even have a tape player this was a no brainer! Easiest DIY of them all next to windshield wipers and floor mats.

My 1997 came with the Bird unit (bought used). Can anyone post a pic of what is stock ? I have the CD premium pkg. Seller must have ditched what he removed, many thanks. I'd like to have the original unit in there...Steve

I just put one in but I wish I had seen this thread first. I got mine from Gert, but while his price and shipping was more, his service is top notch. The cassette holder had to go, first thing I did to the car after bumperplugs.

Okay, I have the consule cup and rubber mat but haven't installed yet... I didn't know that you need additional nuts and screws. You don't resecure with the screw that attaches the cassette holder?

If not, I wouldn't worry about going to Porsche for the hardware unless you have other stuff to order at the same time (shipping would be more than the parts I think)
You could get what you need at a hardware store. The nuts are the self-retaining type, clip on. Just get a couple of screws that have a small enough head to fit in the recess in the tray. They don't even have to be black since the little mat covers them. They are less than 1/2" long and get self-retaining nuts to match.
If I recall correctly, the screw that holds in the cassette holder is the same or at least very close to the 2 you need for the new tray. Just match 'em up.

It's official... the easiest mod I've ever done on any car. This thread motivated me to finally put the stupid thing in. Unscrewed, pulled out cassette console, moved self-retaining nut to new position, placed new console, screwed in, placed mat. It literally took me longer to write this post. Anyway, I just used one screw.... it's snug as a bug.

Does the bird armrest render the console cup unusable?

Here's what's in mine...
...a nice little arm rest that doubles as a cup holder! Even thought the cup holder feature sort of sucks...
