Default Cross-post: Need Advice: Single stage or basecoat/clearcoat paint for my 993?

Hey,

The Red Sled is going in the paint booth for primer today. Monday they will block-sand, and Tuesday they will paint.

The auto body has given me a choice: go with a single stage urethane paint, or a base coat/clear coat? They are willing to do either and I think the shop is competent enough to do either.

Bear in mind this car came with single-stage Guard's Red. However, this is not a concours car, it is a daily driver and sees winter duty. I plan on driving it for decades, so whatever paint I choose I'm going to be living with for at least the next 6 or 7 years.

Thanks!

Thaddeus

Go with clear coat over the base if have that option. It will protect base coat more especially as daily driver.

Here's what the poor wounded beast looks like right now... like something that's been stolen and stripped. Hard to look at...

Hopefully I'll have some nice "after" pictures in about a week or so!

With clear/base you can wet sand and polish plus repair scratches in the clear easily. I don't think you can do all of this with the single stage paints. I would discuss this with the shop.

Thaddeus,
It's coming along nicely!

What's with the extensive sanding on the front fenders? Did you have paint chips, or other imperfections?

There was a dent from the deer on the passenger side they fixed. On the driver's side, there were some rock chips they are fixing and a scuff from the deer. I am also paying them out of my own pocket to fix the stone chips on the front bumper... the car should look flawless when they are done.
