Default painting the brake calipers

Hello:

I did the search and would like to ask for more opinion regarding to painting the calipers.

I recently purchased the 1995 from one of the rennlister. The car already comes with red calipers, but do have some stones chips which really bother me. So, I am in the process of repaiting all 4 calipers. I read through the search and seems that people who DIY are using the "brush" type instead of spray. I would like to know by using the brush method, how is the quality comes out? Is the paint is even?

I also searcching for the clear coat and could not find one with high temp clear coat. Anyone can suggest me of what brand of clear coat do I need?

Thanks

Yes. Just buy a better brush than the one that comes in the kit. You need to put on 4-5 coats, so the finish smooths out as you go. I used Duplicolor Engine Enamel Clear over the decals.

You put several coats on. As you go, each coat gets smoother. I skipped the enamel clear coat and have not had any problems.

Yup that duplicolor rocks man, dont get spray definetely use brush. Just make sure you do good prep work on the caliper first, and i would try to craft some wooden structure that you can bolt the caliper to so you can paint it from all angles.

Been thinking of doing mine. What are you guys doing about the old paint on the caliper? Some type of paint remover or just sanding what's there and going over it?

The kit comes with spray on cleaner, that works for grease and grime, but I chipped off any loose paint, and lightly sanded bad areas. Th paint layers on pretty thick, and cover any uneven spots. I would just get all of the chipping areas under control.

Did any of you guys do this with the caliper still on the car? My Big Reds are looking pretty haggard. They weren't packed well when shipped from Germany, so I had some touch-up work to do when I got them. And when she was in the shop a while ago, someone must have put a temporary wheel on the left front to move the car around and the wheel was not the right size. So it scuffed up the caliper pretty good. I need to do this as soon as I move to a warmer climate. Sure hate the thought of removing the calipers though.

Yes. I put the car on jack stands, removed the wheels and went to town. By the the time I finished the fourth one, the first was ready for another coat.

I've found the VHT red & clear spray to be pretty easy and a good match but to each his own. I'm sure the brush-on comes out good also. Start on Monday, do 1 wheel a night, back on the road by the weekend. Good Luck!

I did all mine 6 months ago with the proper caliper kit. The preperation is the key. The brush you get is crap so get a decent one before you start.
The kit came with a caliper cleaner that took everything off, and then I used a wire brush on a drill to clean them up.
Job looked factory and still doe's 6 months on.
Takes a bit of time though, so don't be in a rush! Lots of niggly parts to get to around the nipples. Never bothered with the clear.
Good luck. The end result is worth it.
