How hard is it to change 2nd gear syncro?
My 993 is about to hit 91K on the odometer, and it's on the original clutch. I just scored (from the Rennlist classifieds) an RS clutch and flywheel kit that someone put on his '95 but immediately removed because of stalling problems, for about half the price of new. So at some point this winter I'm going to pull the gearbox and do this project -- let's call it a "preventive upgrade." Sweet.
The only thing I'm wondering about is my 2nd gear syncro. My gearbox shifts beautifully (I recently installed the RS shifter, changed fluid, and bled the slave cyl), but 2nd is definitely a little stiff and notchy. Nothing bad by any means, but it feels different than the other gears, all of which are very smooth and consistent.
When I do the clutch job this winter, how big a deal is it to put new syncros in 2nd gear? I did a search and found very little on tranny rebuilding. I don't own the specialized tools to do this, so I'd just bring the gearbox to a local shop. What should this cost in parts and labor? Should I expect that a notchy 2nd gear is anything *other* than worn syncros?

I cannot answer your question, but you may want to search transmission fluids. They make a huge difference and the brand that works for one person doesn't work for another.
My current 993 (85k miles) works perfectly with Mobil 1. My former 993 was very notchy and got worse when I put in Mobil 1. My wrench suggested Redline Shockproof fluid on my former car and it worked miracles. My 2nd gear syncro issue completely went away.
Good luck and enjoy the LWF!

Yeah, try fluids first before you tear up the transmission. Fluids makes a big difference in how the synchros feel.
If you are not familiar on how to work on a manual gear box it would be better to send the box off to someone else to do the synchros. And at the same time you might want to upgrade to the steel synchros instead of the original soft brass ones.
