Default Does my transmission drain plug look normal?

I changed the gearbox oil today (first time), and the oil itself didn't look too bad -- I can't find in all the service records I have on my car when it was last done; my car just hit 90K and I'm assuming that it was done at the appropriate time (my car was very well maintained by the previous owner). My gearbox shifts beautifully -- no notchiness or anything like that, and frankly I'm not the least bit concerned about its condition. But in all the years of changing the gear oil in my 915-equipped 911, I never saw a cluster of fine metal filings like on my 993. I smeared the filings on a paper towel and examined them, and there were no chunks whatsoever -- just a very fine metallic dust.

I also flushed the brakes and bled the slave cylinder. All in all a great day. Obligatory pic of yours truly blowing brake fluid out of the vinyl tubing and into a makeshift container after bleeding the slave.

Nice pic. Henceforth, that shall be known as the "Noah Clutch Bong"......

I changed my tranny fluid last year and found a very fine paste adhered to the magnetic plug. Certainly not the Mount Olympus shown in your pic, but probably normal for the 36,000 original miles on the car at that time. I am certain the fluid I drained was original - the plugs had no signs indicating prior removal.

Unless your records indicate otherwise, there's a good chance that your fluid was original. If so, I would not be worried about said shavings.

The shavings may look normal.

The guy in the photo...well, I'm not so sure about that!

Mine had similar looking paste, too. I hope it is normal.

That drain plug looks a little worse than mine did at 25k miles. I changed my fluid a few weeks after I got the car AND after the seller had paid for the 30k miles service which allegedly included a tranny fluid change. Does this drain plug look like it had been cleaned off a month earlier?
