CEL vs Model Year Question...
Hello All,
I am in the market for my first P-Car and I have been boning up on things to look for and problems. Is it my imagination or are most of the CEL problems happening to 1996 cars? It seems like all of the posts regarding CEL problems are written by 1996 owners and not 1997 or 1998 owners?
I am interested in a very meticously maintained 1996 carrera that has had the SAI valve replaced and the ports blown out. I don't know if the valve guides have been replaced and I don't know about oil consumption yet. Should I keep looking for a 1997 or 1998?
Thanks,
Gregg608

Anyone?
Please comment and help a former Corvette owner out here!
It looks to me like all of the CEL light problems are posted by 1996 owners. Is this CEL light issue kind of like some of the Corvette problems where it happens to 10 cars out of a run of 10,000 but all ten owners post and it looks like an epidemic and everyone panics?
Inquiring minds want to know before they pull the trigger.
Thanks.

The 1995s use OBD I, and doesn't report the SAI issue that is noted by the 1996+, OBDII cars. There is virturally no difference (aside from minor cosmetics) between the 1996, 1997, 1998 cars. There are no bad choices, there are good things about all the cars, and some bads. The 1995 has a bit less HP & torque than the 1996+, but you'll never be plagued by SAI clogging issues (they get clogged... just not reported by OBDI). Good luck wioth your search, and welcome aboard.

Just a thought that perhaps the 1996 models seem to have more CEL issues than the 1997 or 1998 models is simply that they are older and are likely to have more miles and wear, thus more chances for issues that would trigger CEL issues. Perhaps you'll see more 1997 and 1998s coming up with the same issues as the cars age. Just my $.02
