Default My new 8" subwoofer box - finished and installed

Just thought I would show off my new subwoofer box that I built out of 1/2 inch MDF and covered with some black and tan vinyl. My lovely wife did the embroidery stitching for me. I think it turned out pretty good. What do you think?

It is nice to have my sub installed again. I've included the old style box that I originally bought as the first picture. I wasn't happy with it because it limited my seat travel and leaked some air when the bass was pushed hard. The new box is airtight and adds some really nice bass for an 8" sub. I also gained some seat travel in the process. Hope you enjoy the pictures.

Thanks, I worked as many angles as I could to use up the available space toward the back of the car.

Default Subwoofer

I tried a subwoofer behind the passenger's seat and within three days, I took it out. Just too much for that little car. My son is enjoying it now in his Jeep. With the Hi-Fi option speakers and a CDR-220 head and a proper wiring job, you should have all the bass you need. At least we will hear you coming up behind us!

My car did not come with the Hi-Fi option, so I replaced all my speakers with Infinity products and still was not happy with the bass. Had to add the small sub for some additional thump. It is not nearly as loud as the 12" sub my son has in his 914. He built a custom box to place in front of the passenger seat. That sub will rattle your teeth out of your cranium.

Adds a real nice bass to the car without being "thump in your trunk and shake your windows out". It really is not that overpowering but really brings in the lows that were lost with the 4x6 plate speakers in the back and the 5 1/4 round and tweater components in the front. It is a nice setup I think with all the road and engine noise that we already love to listen to. You could probably spend tons more money on a higher quality setup, but I bet you couldn't tell much differnce once you got rolling down the road.

Nice job on the box - tricky angles. MDF - so useless for most things, but so great for speaker enclosures.

MDF was really easy to work with, I have not used it for anything else and can't see using it for much more than a speaker box. This was my first speaker box, I really had fun figuring out all the angles and making sure I had the volume correct for the speaker. Nothing like making a cardboard piece and then getting to work on cutting out the MDF.

The MDF dust is supposed to be kind of toxic, but otherwise it's nice to cut and drill. I made a home sub back in 2000 to go with some Infinity Kappas, and it's been great for movies. You're making me think of building a car sub now.... If you have scannable templates, you could post your design in the DIY section. Off-topic pictures:

Looks sweet! Aside from the education I get from this board, inspiration lives here too!

Thanks for the comment. I'll look into getting some measurements and such and see about posting them in the DIY if there is interest. I don't have templates to scan but maybe some drawings....

Looks good. And at least you get to keep the back seats.

Thanks. Funny you say that. That was the whole reason the guy who sold it to me had. Just needed some room for his kids. Worked for me, I don't have any.

The problem is that the front trunk is also full of amps, so the only place for groceries is the front seat.

How does it sound? Did you do any other speaker upgrades?
