Greetings again from a 997 owner looking to add a 993, a much admired car. Visited St. Louis past weekend. Dealer there, DeanTeam, is selling a 97 red cab, posted on the internet (Auto Trader) as having 20K miles and asking 32K. After I went to see this car, CarFax indicated that the mileage is incorrect and that there was some damage to left rear in 03 at 30K miles. Best guess in actual mileage is about 45K and the car looks good and drives strong. Now, please, how low should the price be to justify the risk? OR is it too much of a risk at any price? Thanks for any thoughts.

You will get killed on resale value unless you have all the dealer tricks up your sleeve when you sell it. I would think mid 20's, they may have acquired it in the low 20's based upon that fact or bought it at auction in which case they had no idea those issues were out there. If you like to haggle, you could show them all kinds of straight cars priced similarly without damage or odometer issues, they will probably just wait for the impulse buyer that finances to unload to.

Why would you still consider buying a car from a dealer who would have screwed you if you didn't run a Carfax on it?
I would search this Board and buy a car from a fellow Rennlister, before I would deal with your local, cheatin' dealer.

I looked at that car. Looks pretty ratty inside and out. They just moved it to the front of the lot to get more exposure since they've been sitting on it for months.

I'm sure you'll find a much nicer cab for that price.

I have yet to see a decent car from them. I'd be very leary of that dealership. I live in the St. Louis area - if you see a car from here, let me know and I'd be more than happy to go look at it for you. PM me if you have questions.

Default How did the dealer 'present' the car to YOU?

Was the dealer up front with the discrepancies before you asked about it? If not chalk them off as a typical used car dealer and exercise caveat emptor. If used car dealers were up front with the major known discrepancies on the cars that come into their possession, they would NEVER sell them. Plain and simple. Your best 'used' car buy might be a 'certified' used Lexus or Porsche lease turn in, but alas, not really applicable on the 993. Better yet, look at the plethora of cars on the Rennlist Classifieds.. Caveat Emptor AGAIN though - I have noticed that several cars are listed by Rennlisters but they never post nor will they post that their car IS for sale. I inquired about one of these recently (A supposed R-lister + Used Car Dealer) and I asked him why he did not post a thread about it. He was kind of slippery sounding while he backstepped and when I inquired if he had a web site, he was equally slippery and full of practiced jibberish. PM me for more deatails if desired. Morale of the story: I would be careful about the Rennlist Classifieds too.

A 97 cab with 20k mi for $32k seems too good to be true. The fact that it has "sat for months" unsold means it probably IS too good to be true.

It doesn't sound like it applies to this car but do keep in mind that CARFAX reports can show erroneous information.

I agree with all previous comments. Why buy this car with all it's negative baggage? You already have
your 997 to enjoy so why not take your time and find a well documented 993 with a clean Carfax?
The car you seek may be right up here ^ ^ ^
