Default ABS functioning?

On both track (novice) and street (testing), I've inadvertently braked beyond threshold a few times on dry pavement in a straight line, to the point the front tires slightly lockup. Basically, was trying to get a feel for the limits under braking...

Anyway, I have never felt ABS kick in - at what point, if at all, would you expect it to kick in in such a situation? Not a big deal, just wondering if my ABS is in fact finctional after all. I'd be interested in comments as to what to expect in the dry, and what in fact the ABS feels like when it kicks in.

Cheers~!

Matt

I've been wondering about that too. I've never really felt the abs kick in on my car and with the way I drive it should really kick in a lot.

The only time I ever feel my abs is on the track coming off the main straight after the turn one kink, braking really hard for the 2nd gear left hand turn two. I can feel the pedal pulsing as I'm scrubbing off serious speed.

Cool Put on a set of....

racing tires, brake hard, you'll feel it. I have on many occasions. Calif Speedway...coming into the infield off the banking, 993 car going 135+, depress brakes to get the beast slowed down...ah!!!!, in kicks the ABS, with a little help from the LSA rear suspension, the LSD and we make another safe and controlled deceleration.

I have rarely felt the ABS kick in on the track. Maybe I'm doing it all wrong, but I have really tried to brake less and brake late, all so I can carry more speed into the turn. I trail-brake a moderate amount (true trail-braking where you're using the brakes to rotate the car and applying the throttle to stop the rotation. It's not just braking after you turn the wheel.) and I still don't often hit the ABS.

In the wet, I'll activate the ABS quite a bit.

The ABS will kick in. Did you ever think that its so good that it is working and you just don't feel it?

I too try to brake as little as possible....but with DOT 100 rated tires (RA-1), I do feel the ABS, and there is no rain in sight.

Go out on an isolated road, jam on the brakes, you'll probably feel it then. If your wheels lock up and tire smoke is everywhere, your ABS may not be functioning correctly.

The only time I've ever gotten into the ABS was when I went into turn 1 at VIR VERY hot then went straight off- I was on MSCP tires and using Hawk blue pads.

I was attempting to trail brake...still can't do it in the 993

I jammed on the brakes once in a panic stop in traffic that was moving fast and then not at all... they kicked in then and I was glad!

As I understand it, trail-braking is going so hard and late into a corner that you apex a little bit earlier and use the brakes to rotate the car. You have to brake very hard with a very fast, initial application. As you approach the turn-in, your brake pressure should be lessening to give you rotation. There is just a bit of oversteer. If you have to correct the slide with the wheel, you have rotated too much. If you have to add more steering input, you haven't rotated enough and applied enough braking pressure.

It's a very hard technique to learn, and I am certainly no expert, but it has made me go faster.
