Default Shifter Stabilizer Rod woes

i was driving the other day when my shifter suddenly felt like it lost all engagement to the tranny.

upon further inspection, i noticed that i was able to use 2nd, 4th, and 6th gear. i could not access 1st, 3rd, and 5th. i was able to get it home in using those gears (thank god no hills to climb!).

when i removed the under tray i noticed the stabilizer rod had popped off it's ball socket. the material inside of the cup looks corroded and brittle.

is it as simple as gutting the brittle material and pressing in new rubber pieces? does anyone have any idea of the part number?

thanks!

The ball cup insert is a hard nylon like material - possibly teflon; regardless, this insert 'may' be the same size as the 928 clutch release lever pivot cup - but I am not sure. Otherwise, the entire ball cup assembly can be threaded out and reordered. Check PET6 for both pieces.
One of the Rennlist sponsors has just introduced a complete stainless replacement for this identical assembly on the 928 forward shift rod, shown here. Carl has produced many helpful pruducts, and having worked with both the 928 & 993, I know that they are the same part - 928 424 005 01
As for the fixed end of the rod, the ball cup insert on the clutch release lever is 928 116 145 03: if that didn't work, my choice would be to cut & tap the fixed end of your forward rod .... and buy two of Carl's all stainless units.

The forward joint is indeed a 928 part number and should be replaced as a complete piece. Oddly, the fit of a new one still has a certain amount of slop.

thanks for the information.

it would make more sense to have replaceable inserts though, especially for the welded side of the rod.

i have a hard time believing this material can be so brittle. anyone else ever see this?

here's a shot of a new joint costing ~$80. the black material appears to be rubberized.
