the dreaded 0410
What would be the consenes? My mechanic says for 1k he can clean out the ports by taking them off the engine and see if it works. This is the first time the cel has come on my 96 tip targa with 46k, is , is this good money after bad ? Am I just postponing the 5k rebuil? It figures I just bought a 78 targa with 45k yesterday, cashmere beige ouch!!! beto

If you mean there is no smog inspection then why bother....the ports have NO bearing on the operation of the engine....its for smog only, save your $1K and do a small upgrade of some sort.

Is this the only code you got?

IIRC there is no inspection in most of Wisconsin. When I lived there I needed to take the cars to get smogged, but I lived in Milwaukee County.
Do you have a roll of 3M black electrical tape ($1.39, Home Depot) and a pair of scissors?
(But, of course, that would be wrong! )

that's the only code! I could tape the corner in my left lense of my glasses then everyone would be happy! Yes and I could use the 1k to paint the rockers and the back bumper, and new stone guards. I live in the Door.

my mechanic said the ignoring factor is good unless some other code comes up unknowingly and the longer I wait the more difficult it may be to "fix" the problem??

If it were me, I would reset the code light and hope for the best. Keep an eye on your oil useage and if you start to burn oil your valve guides are history. Before you trust all the ans. you recieve I would do a search..just because the passages have nothing to do with the performance in the "short" run there is a good chance that if left un-checked your valve may end up in two or more parts.

i drove for years with the cel on. used the black tape solution. moved to phila and had to have the ports cleaned. worked for 5/6 so the light comes on after a while and i reset it. having driven for years, and many miles with the light on, i can testify to it's lack of effect on the car's performance or longevity. I still have most of the roll of black tape available since it only took a little piece for the fix. and it's official OEM Porsche-USA black tape. No $hit. I'd be glad to send you a piece.

rich hopefully it's an iris blue thing, I too have a 96 though a targa, love the color. After I crashed my Arena red I waited for the iris blue. it has gt wheels, big reds, 17's and Euro horns!

Iris blue targe, cool. My baby started out at the Porsche display in the 1996 NAIAS in Detroit. Wonder if other IB cars were there too. Cars Dawydak had an Iris Blue turbo for sale 2-3 years ago. I've only run into one other IB car on the road. It was a '95 or '96 C2 Cab and was IB/Marble/Marble like mine. It was in the same audio shop I used in Richmond VA.

I thought the stoneshields were actually the 3M stuff, maybe OEM Porsche CEL Blocking Tape is 3M, too? (Unless the 3M stuff all has to go to Zuffenhausen to be blessed before it will work.)

If you choose to just tape over the bulb or pull it, I would definitely invest in a cheap OBD2 scanner and check for codes every couple of months so you'll have a heads up if anything else is wrong. I can't believe how many people are driving around like that and are probably oblivious to all kinds of codes in there. It;s best to take care of a problem causing a CEL early before it gets expensive. I understand not wanting to drop a load of money to do a top end since you don't need to for smog, but I would at some point when you have money, or if oil consumption becomes an issue, since the valve guides will eventually get worse anyway.

Just go for the scanner( as Chris says), and clear the code - forget the tape ...
I have had the P0410 ( left bank SAI code) now come in 3x ... ~ once/1500 miles: no big deal, clear the code in seconds, save on tape! - and keep the CEL circuit active in case something really important should be flashed to your attention!!
At 71K miles, I am using < a quart of oil/5K miles, so not too concerned about top end health .... nor the SAI system.
