Default Advice please - oil & filter using ramps?

Here's the problem:

I don't have nice even ground to change my 993's oil & filters every year.

Could I get some nice strong, wide ramps & drive the rear wheels up onto these to do the job? Would this mean that a lot of oil was left in the car? I'll undo the pipe as well each time & do it properly....

Thanks folks!

Congrats on your desire to handle your own oil changes - I do them and find a great deal of satisfaction knowing that it was done correctly.

I like giving everything under the car a thorough look, so my method is to do the oil change using four flat-topped jack stands. Ramps may work, but you also run the risk of scarring the lower corners of the front bumper.

Another reason I'd suggest you go with jackstands - If you take off the right rear wheel, it's a snap to get the wheelwell cover off and oil out of tank. Takes like five minutes.

I have a slanted driveway and use two Rhino ramps and a floor jack for oil changes. I think it works even better since I have the front higher than the rear and can get more oil out of the front cooler. I don't drive onto the ramps. I jack the car up and place the ramps under the rear wheels. For the large filter I remove the ramp, the wheel, the liner and lower that side down with the floor jack to get better oil flow. I'm not under the car for that filter, so there's no danger of getting hurt. I really like to get every drop out that I can. I also remove the hard line for each oil change and that gets another 1/2 qt. at least out of there.

Actually you can change the oil with just jacking up the right rear corner of the car.

(1). Remove the plastic side skirt liner to get to the oil tank drain plug, drain the tank.
(2). Jack up the car from right rear, place jack stand under engine craddle
(3). Remove the right rear wheel
(4). Pull up the wheel liner
(5). Change the oil filter by the oil tank
(6). Change the 2nd oil filte, with or without removing the oil line
(7). Drain crank case oil
(8). Install liner, wheel, lower the car

The last three times I have not removed the right rear wheel or liner. During the draining I lower the car also.

One further question...what volume of oil comes out when you do a full oil change with the car level guys?

I could compare the amount that comes out with the car on ramps & see if it's the same. I'm still keen on this way of doing it if possible.

Thanks!

You can't compare the two. Sometimes you may be .5-1 qt. low on oil and only find out about it the day before you plan an oil change. You never know how much you have before you dump it. But removing that hard line from the case made a noticeable difference to me. I always measured by how much it took on refilling to get to the right level and only ever check it when it's really hot, as in temp needle at 9 o'clock.
