OT: Wolf in Sheep's Clothing- New DD
I thought I would share with you one of the most impressive and relatively plain looking wagons, in my opinion. I recently bought an '06 fully loaded Volvo V70R (4k miles) with the EVOLVE engine management program... WOW! I was looking for a wagon that would perform in the mountains (not NA) and I have been very impressed thus far.
The car is titanium grey with tan interior.... I know strange color combo but the contrast with the brushed aluminum and black panels is similar to some of the black and tan p-car two tone interiors.
Now for the performance, engine hp: 365hp torque: 389tq twin intercooled turbocharged engine with a claimed 0-60mph under 4.5 sec. The car has the 4C suspension system which allows you to adjust dampening and engine performance settings on the fly. I have to say the car has the most comfortable front seats I have ever been in. Apparently they were designed by a chiropractor, go figure.
Anyway, for any looking at wagons, I highly recommending taking a look at the V70R. Apparently they are limiting production on them for the next 2 years, similar to what Audi for their S series a few years back.
Also, if anyone is looking for a used 2001.5 VW Passat Wagon (44K miles) and every option (Grey with Black Leather interior) shoot me a PM.
Thanks,
JH

Great info. I would never have thought that a Volvo wagon would have that kind of power. Big step up from the Passat. I had an Audi S4 Avant (their wagen) 250 HP twin turdo that was the same. Looked like a small family wagen and drove like a rocket ship. Enjoy...

yep - we've got 2 of those, a 99 and an 04. My lovely bride gets first pick on a new car (so I can drive nice P-cars) and I get her hand-me-downs to drive in the winter and for parts runs.

I've owned 2 volvo turbos (one of them a wagon) in my life, and my bro is on his second as well ...LOVE them!!! They are incredible cars for comfort, reliability, and stealthy sportiness. I hope one day to have an R wagon one day ...makes pulling into soccer practices and supermarkets all the more worthwhile Congrats!!!

NIce - my xwife has a Volvo turbo wagon form the early 90's back when I had my 3.2 Carerra. I always thought that her wagon would give the 3.2 fits and I actually really enjoyed driving it. I think hers was a 5-cylinder job. I ALMOST bought a genuine Volvo hop up kit for it way back when, the car screamed.

While not a wagon (couldnt get my wife to drive a wagon), we bought a new 2002 S60 T-5 sedan, loaded with everything. It was certainly a sleeper as it pulled quite hard for a 250hp iteration. I think the best two attributes were the seats and the sound system. Both were simply unbelievable in comfort and quality.
The only real downside to the Volvo, at least to the one we had, was the lack of connected-feel to the road. Otherwise, we enjoyed the car!

I've been considering exactly this car (or a '05 Subaru Legacy GT wagon w/5-speed). Thanks for the post, this sounds like it's definitely worth keeping on the list.

I recall reading an article years ago in Car & Driver about a customizer who put 5.0 Mustang engines in Volvo wagons. It was said to spin the tires in any gear. Paul Newman and David Letterman were customers.

A few years ago at Lime Rock, Newman had his latest wagon in the paddock -- based on a V90 I guess, lowered and I think it was badged "T10". I was hoping he'd pop the hood, sadly he didn't.
Here's one of Newman's old cars:

I have a '98 V70 T5 turbo wagon with a 5-speed manual transmission -- that I'm hoping to get the 200k miles out of that I told my wife Volvos are good for. The comfy-chair seats are like nothing else. I'm told that Porsche did some of the development work on the Volvo 850 turbo motor, so there is a connection, albeit ethereal.

We had a R wagon and loved it. Really fast, and comfortable. Did 1000 miles in a day in it several times doing the DFW to LA drive. The best thing is it is stealthly, cops never look twice at it. Enjoy your very nice ride.
As a side, on a recent trip to Sweden, I saw a tricked out R wagon with what appeared to be a prancing horse Ferarri shield on the front fender area, upon close inspection, it was a prancing moose.
