Default Dealers and vehicle service records

Yesterday the local dealership (Thoroughbred Motorcars in Nashville) had a tech session for the PCA club. The 2 service techs covered std. maintenance and mostly just answered questions from those in attendance (apx. 30 people). They also did service inspections (free) for anyone who wanted to have their car put on the lift and checked over by the techs, the techs also allowed anyone and everyone to look/poke around under the cars while they showed what to look for and what they did during their service inspections. All in all it was an enjoyable 4.5 hrs (and when I left there were still cars on the lift).

Anyway, to my question, I asked the service mgr. if they could run the VIN of my car and see what maint. and repair has been done on it since the only thing I have is the stamps in the book. He told me Porsche doesn't keep centralized records of maint. on cars, the only thing the dealer can access is what work was done at that dealership (my car was serviced in CA & AZ so no help for me). The only service they can check is if recalls were performed on an individual car.

In this day and age it just doesn't seem reasonable that Porsche wouldn't have access to what maint. and repairs are being done to their cars except through the warranty system. Am I being unrealistic thinking this?

That's BS. I bought my car in Miami. It was serviced at The Collection there. Once I got my car here, I asked my local Porsche dealership for the service history and they pulled it up and printed them and gave them to me. All the way to the pre-delivery inspection was there.

All the recalls that have been made to the car, key codes, service receipts, etc is stored in a central database that is shared by all dealerships.

BTW, these records are rightfully yours as the owner of the car. Ask nicely, if that doesn't work, a firm demand made to the right manager usually works too.

I have received the same song and dance at our local dealership here in Seattle. They just don't want to bother with printing the records. I will exert some pressure at some point and get the rest of mine.

Any Seattleites have any success getting their records out of Barrier?

The guy I bought my car from told me that his local dealer said they are available if you are willing to fill out some paper work (if you aren't the original owner) and couch up some cash and wait.
I'll contact Porsche NA on Monday for the "official position".

I have assembled all my service records at the 6 Porsche dealers that serviced the car. All of them were very nice in supplying what they had. Most of them required me to provide proof of ownership, some gave me actual copies of receipts, others gave me a computer print out. These dealeships include Sonnen and Carlson in LA and Jack Daniels and Towne Motors in NJ.

All of them told me that they were not connected or linked up. I believe them, I have a friend in the business, if it were possilble, I would have went that route instead of cold calling all these dealers.

Many dealers don't keep records past 5 years unless the car is still being serviced there. It's possible that Porsche tracks warranty claims.....not sure on that one.

Or Robert Larsons. This is where my '95 was initially delivered & serviced. It was also taken to Barrier and Chris' German Auto.
