Question Calling 993's over 100k...

Ok gents (and ladies) who has cars whose mileage exceeds 100k, and what problems have you had, or not had on the way to achieving that mileage, and what are your maintenance protocols (oil type, grade and change intervals, who services vehicle, etc.)?

I am at almost 102K -- Not sure if my example counts as I bought it with 97K.
Full service history from the original owner -- all dealer -- now maintained by me -- on its second clutch and third steering rack (#2 warranty replacement before I owned it)
Nothing over 4K RPM until the thermostat is open -- then ***** to the wall
I run the oil level near the bottom of the 'zone' on the dipstick -- always Mobil1 15w50
Smog results very good

Car #1: '97 C4S w/ 111K, purchased w/ 99K. Every receipt from new. I've changed the oil once. Have not spent a dime on it otherwise. As with all my 911's since 1980 I just kinda start 'em up and drive 'em. (My driveway is within 100 yards of a freeway onramp.) Car did have a full top end/clutch @ 75K for the SAI problem. An alternator and a few sets of tires and brakes along the way.

Car #2: 1995 C2 w/ 124K, purchased w/ 124K. Yeah, in 6 months I've driven it 500 miles, half of them on the track. Full 3.8RS conversion, less than 10K on everything so not much to do! Basic warm-up before I hit it hard on the track.

Both cars self-maintained, change oil whenever it's needed, Mobil 1 usually on a street car, Redline on any track car.

just shy of 110K 97 C4S. Has the SAI.....and don't care Bought with 92K from essentially the first real owner (original owner only had it for 3500 miles....he doesn't count). It has a minor leak from one of the jugs but has caused no problems. Mainly used infrequently now and on track.

102,500 no reliability issues. Had the top end and a few other things done 9k miles ago. Burned zero oil through the spring and early summer. Burned perhaps 1/4 quart in the heat of the summer with a few AutoX's thrown in. Most reliable car I have owned bar none. The only issue I see going forward is replacing some suspension bits (bushings, tie rods, etc) and I have to replace the "through bolts" on the engine as it leaves a drop or two of oil perhaps once a week at most.

Hi Dan,

You may want to use the Search ...this has been covered quite a few times, and one thread fairly recently, IIRC. The short answer is warm her up properly, drive it hard and regularly, change oil/filters. Grab a drink and hunt the archives

Rufus has close to 110,000 miles, but the total Ruf conversion was done at 86,000 miles, so the engine and suspension is basically brand new. I love my car.

It seems there are some mechanical design issues with all the 355s... bought two of them both had low compression from PPI, so had to walk away.

I believe it has to do with the weak factory exhaust headers which crack and since the Ferrari engine runs extremely hot if the crack header situation is not taken care of right away then the valves could get damaged. Thus cause low compression.

So in order to have a good reliable running F355 one will first have to spend $5k to replace the headers with a beefed up aftermarket unit, and then there is the valve guide issue, which is not as horrible, but again not cheap for the repair.

I still love to have a F355 as it is the last "old school" Ferrari, 3.5 liter at 375 hp is just unreal. But to be realistic and avoid all the costly repairs I may need to step up into a 360, so I am sort fo waiting right now, as there are so many 360 in the market I feel that the price is coming down very quickly.
