Default Radar Detector mount bad for windshield?

Just received my new Escort in the mail last night and plopped down on the couch with the manual. One of the first things I read was this:

"Caution!

A few vehicles (including Porsches) have windshields with a soft anti-lacerative coating on the inside surface. Use of suction cups will permanently mar this coating. Consult your dealership or the vehicle owners manual to determine if your windshield has this coating."

Does the 993 have this coating or am I just fine to stick the Passport up there without worry?

Black,

I researched this warning a few uears ago when I bought my Escort. Does not apply to the 993 - the ws does not have this coating. I think the 996 does.

The Escort goes perfectly above the rearview mirror. Cannot be seen from outside, clear shot down the road from up high. I used the std ws mount, but used 3M 'Dual-Lock' self-adhesive. Suction cups, uh, suck. Hard wire cable is avail from Escort and easily hidden and hot with ignition.

Use a visor clip if you have the battery powered Escort.

Good to hear. Thanks for the info Mike. How do you like yours?

Its the X50, not the wireless. I picked it free through a rewards program at work

I wrote that section of the manual in the 1980's for a previous Escort detector, and it's stayed in the manuals over the years.

Those windshields were only used briefly by a couple car makers, and I don't think anyone has used them in decades- they had a tough plastic surface on the inside to protect unbelted occupants whose face went through the windshields in a crash.

Porsche called it "sekuriflex," on 944's it was option M462

(scroll down to "windows")

I think the main problem is that it's too easy to damage the inside surface when cleaning or scraping frost.

My 1987 Turbo Cup car DOES have that windshield.
