Where to get a key cut?
This may be a dumb question, but after years of walking on the edge with only one key, I finally ordered a new key and lighted key head from Pelican. Where have you guys taken blank keys to get them cut. I have used Home Depot in the past for other cars, but was curious as to what others are doing as they key was a little pricey to have it screwed up while getting it cut. Thanks in advance!

It's simple - you have to call all the Locksmiths in your area until you find one that will cut steel keys. I must have called 10 here until I found one. The guy said that cutting steel keys is no harder or different than cutting brass - just takes a little longer. He charged me 8 bucks, (4 bucks per key) and they work great. Alternatively, you could send me your key and blank and I could get it done for you.

Local key cutters do not stock 911 blanks. Go on ebay and buy one for 13 bucks - see my previous pos on getting 2 blanks from Bulgaria recently - they worked perfect and I got them in less that 10 days. Unbelievalble

Thanks for the replies. I've already purchased a blank for Pelican...now I just need to get it cut! Looks like a locksmith capable of cutting steel keys should do the trick.
I know how expensive VIN cut keys can be...I just paid about $80 for a no-frills key for my 540i. They wanted almost $200 for the key with the keyless entry stuff built into it...jeez!

Here's the deal on keys: I have a very capable local locksmith. San Pedro Lock and Key.
Me and my clever *** brought them the little cardboard credit card with the 4(?) digit key code stamped in blue. He had was able to look up the key code (not the VIN) and code cut me a new flat key (no rubber head) for something like $13-$15. It definitely looked like the cuts on my existing keys, but it didn't work--so much for the code/VIN method. I expect it had something to do with the ridges between consecutive "zero positions" (deepest cuts) being left with a little bump in between rather than ground straight across.
I bought 914 blanks off ebay for $4 or $5 each, went back and used my factory-fresh emercency "mini key" as a master and cut two "analog" originals at no charge. They work fine. So don't ever lose your last functioning key!

Thanks for the advice. I actually have the emergency mini-key as well, so plan to have my new key cut from that rather than my everyday key, which I'm scared is old and will snap off when I crank the car up one day!

I had the spare key actually sanp off in my ignition the day I bought my car. Luckily a teeny little piece stuck out enough to grab with a mini set of needle nose pliars. Talk about pucker factor...I immediatley got two blanks off ebay and my wife has one plus a spare.

So, how many of us would permanently immobilize the immobilizer if we could?
