Right, so you take the excellent seat rail mount design and add a deep, cup style cupholder with, say, six gentle but resilient metal fingers that encircle the cup and expand to any reasonable size. Coat the fingers with high grip "wing walk" or similar. Add a small lever that locks the expanding fingers in place once sized to your cup/bottle.
I've got a DT Cup Holder. I don't drink in the car very often, but when I do, the DT holds very securely, does not move around, can be easily stowed when not in use. Very inexpensive, no tools required.
David - yes, I have that one and it works just fine, though it puts the drinks behind your elbow and therefore they are a bit hard to reach. Nevertheless, it puts otherwise useless (to me) space to good use and I like it.
It comes with strong double-sided tape for installation. I found that the cupholder seems to need to be removed for certain work on the hand brake (?). Therefore, after it was removed, I replaced the double-stick tape with some good velcro (from Home Depot) which works just as well and permits the unit to be removed if needed.
All in all, worth the investment I believe. Good luck.
