Default Help identifying chip

My '95 came with a small plastic container with a chip inside as well as a set of instructions from Weltmeister regarding their performance chip. While I am fairly certain the Weltmeister chip is actually installed in the car, the chip I have is not labled with anything Porsche-specific. It has a series of numbers on top: 1 367 358 164. Is it the original, or the aftermarket?

I've already removed the seat and would like to reinstall the stock chip in an effort to eliminate some hot weather pinging.

Looks like the OEM chip to me.

Steve,
Thank you. If I can find the time tomorrow, I'll reinstall the stock chip and see if I can feel a difference. I presume the battery should be disconnected before unplugging the ECU?

No need to disconnect the battery; just make sure the key is off before you pull the ECU.

Steve,
So there is no issue unplugging the ECU in order to open the case on the bench?

Nossir,...With the key off, remove the ECU, open the cover, momentarily ground yourself to dissipate any static charges, and replace the chip.

I finally found the time to re-install the factory chip tonight. After closing the ECU case (Labled "Motronic 261.203.163 / 993.618.123.02") and plugging everything back in, I fired her up. Oddly, I found that the idle seemed smoother.... I let the car idle for a while and then took a gentle drive - all seems well. Hopefully I can take it for a proper whirl tomorrow and see if the occasional pinging is gone.

With the seat out, I was able to apprehend $0.29 worth of coins that made their presence known during vigorous cornerning. I also unbolted the mounting plate for the ECU in order to retreive a few crumbs and an old band-aid.

All's well for now.

Andreas

I think those Weltmeister chips run a buttload of advance timing, no wonder it's running smoother. Or maybe it was the two Cheetos and the bandaid stuck to the ECU.

I feel better with the stocker back in place. As for the timing, I've heard the same from a few knowledgeable folks on here. The Weltmeister chip may just appear on Ebay soon....

Apart from the coins and such, it was like new under the seat.

Andreas - interested in your comments once you get to open her up a bit.
I have been listening intently for the slightest ping and (knock) on wood, NOTHING....
Take a look at the # of posts.... spooky>>>>>

Andreas, I too have a Weltmeister chip that came with the car. I removed it & put the stock chip in & the car ran much smoother. I have since invested in a Rennsport Chip from Steve which I love (it's nice having him 20 minutes away). The Welmeister chip is currently sitting in it's case in the drawer.

Brian,
That's good to hear. I took the car out for a vigorous run today - no pinging. I drove it under the same conditions during which I've noticed pinging in the past. It generally seems to run smoother. Whether or not it's a mental thing because I've changed something, I still feel better having the original chip back in there. The car seems just as powerful as before.

I'll put the Weltmeister chip on Ebay.

They have too much low & mid-range timing for the current state of pump gasolines sold in the country and when an engine accumulates the normal buildup of carbon on the pistons, it makes an octane sensitive machine,...

Steve,
I was simply concerned with engine damage. I could care less about the potential for 10 more hp. This car is with me for the long haul.
