Greetings all. I am new to the forum and ask your assistance with a radio upgrade I am considering. I have a 1995 911 Carrera Coupe with the stock CR-210 AM/FM/cassette radio. I am beginning to have problems with the unit and am considering upgrading to a CDR-220. I am curious whether or not the units will be plug and play exchangable and whether or not the Porsche Becker Silverstone 7860 six-CD changer would interchange with the stock unit currently in the front boot and use the existing wire and connections? Thanks for your time!

Not sure about the CD player, but the head unit is plug and play. If you're in the Los Angeles area come over and I'll do it for you. If not, PM me and I'll walk you through it. Welcome to the board...

Thanks Chuck. I am in Orlando, FL and really appreciate your offer. I have purchased some stiff wire to make the releasing probes but am not sure about removing the trim strip. Thanks.

quasr: They are interchangeable. However, you may wish to get a new face plate for the CDR-220, as the unit is tough to read in a 993. You can get the face plate from Becker. You may want to check out the Becker Board, which was helpful for me when I moved from 210 to 220.
BTW, I have a CDR-220 with stock 6-CD player and Dension IceLink which I would sell if you can't find an alternative. I installed an Alpine unit for the Blutooth and iPod integration.

The Becker Board seems to have moved or disappeared. Not sure what you mean by the face plate being hard to read in a 993. How would the new face plate read better? Thanks.

The Porsche model Becker CDR-220 was designed for a lower installation point (in a 996?) When installed in a 993 dash location the LCD screen may be hard to read because the angle is significantly different. (No personal experience yet).
Becker sells a modified replacement faceplate for a 993 application of this unit. I believe the cost is around $150 or so with the return to them of your current face-plate.
Becker USA is at www.beckerautosound.com and they take orders over the phone.

Thanks to all the great posts from the ones who have undergone the same conversion, I have ordered an exchange faceplate from Becker for $100.00. The upgrade face plate has an orange back light behind the LCD which makes it visible from an angle such as the 993 install. As soon as the new faceplate arrives, will give it a go. Next project will be a spark plug change. Thanks all!

95's came stock with a CR-1 unit made by Alpine and is defininately not plug and play with the 220. But you said you had a 210 unit, so Chuck W's post is spot on.

You were right, just checked out the unit itself (wise move at this point). It is a CR-1. According to Becker, I will also need a power cable adapter. Thanks for bringing up the inevidible.

I installed a CDR-210 (replacing my CR-1), it was plug and play, but I have no backlight. I presume I need to tap a line somewhere. Am I correct or did I just get a bad unit?

I am going from the CR-1 to a CDR-220. Becker sent me an upgraded front panel that will be orange backlit and a different power adapter. I hope it goes in easily. Will let you know early next week. Thanks for your input.

quasr, it is about a 5 minute swap, a couple of pointers though,
1) remove the can that holds the CDR210. The CDR220 is a little bit bigger and it won't go in with the can. simply pry the tabs and pull out.
2) plug the antenna in REALLY well, and turn the radio on while you are re-installing it. the cables are fairly tight and the antenna may pull out of the radio as you push it in. When I installed my CDR-220, the antenna would pull out just slightly, FM would still work, but AM went away.
3) have a friend help you, unless you have 3 hands, it helps to have 2 hands push the CDR-220 in, while another slender hand holds the cables from underneath.
The nice thing about the CDR-220 is that it also has an auxilary setting, so you can plug an ipod in, although I found that without an external amp, it is not very loud. you can search the archives for my solution.
Aloha
