No lawyer here but laser, unlike radar is not regulated by the FCC so in theory it is not "illegal" to use a diffuser / jammer. You could possibly get an interfering with a police investigation or some other charge if the violation was flagrant. Good Luck.

I seriously doubt that.

From various radar detector testing consumer testing sites:

" it is still perfectly legal to jam lasers except in Minnesota, California, Oklahoma, Nebraska, Utah, Virginia and Washington D.C., where they have been banned or restricted. "

Do a little more Google or equivalent search and I'm sure you'll find out how severe California penalty is.

So what is a guy to do going on a road trip to California with one of these built in?

"Yes, officer, a nice person online told me it was illegal, but... Yes, I know the law, but... No, it's not a new car - it's a '97... This is 'Ocean Blue' - yes it's my favorite color, too... Thanks officer, if you're ever in Seattle..."

Feign ignorance, be apologetic and humble..... After all, if you live in a state with different rules... how could you you be expected to know the intimacies of CA's laws?

"I'm so sorry officer, I had no idea that CA had such a law....."

I think the original question came from a CA driver, so don't try it or you will be sad.

Same thing I would do if I took my no-front-license-plate 993 to Californication. Tell Johny law "I ain't from 'round these parts"

An Ex-California Police Oficer told me that jammers would be considered devices interfering with Police work, which could lead to impounding the car as evidence.

Mean!

Isn't this the reason jammers turn themselves off after they fire. I though they fire a couple of times then stop so the cops can get a speed reading. If the gun keeps getting an error that it is a dead give away something is up.

technically, the brake pedal could be construed the same way. if you are speeding, your radar detector starts going off, and you start braking, you are interfering with "police work" .. aka "revenue collection".
