Default Engine Ping/Knock - cured...

So I installed my new steering wheel, on my first venture out I noticed the car idled a bit unsteady and pinged/knocked when laying into the throttle.
So I ease up on her a bit figuring the car just needs to relearn.
Drive her a bit and the car seems back to normal.
Today I readjust the steering wheel (to be safe, disconnected battery) and the symptoms are back. Oh and the steering wheel is off a hair. So I guess the car has to learn all over.
I think my car does run a bit hotter being modded to a 3.8 and on occasion I do hear a ping. I do have a Rennsport 3.8 chip.
Any thoughts?

Ever have it live tuned? Probably has to do with the chip parameters

Hi Carmen:

Do you have the additional left-side front oil cooler?

Does the ping occur when its warm/hot outside?

Did you check your distributor belt?

Steve - How are you? I have been meaning to give you a call just to chat. I hope all is well.
I do not have an additional oil cooler. Prior to doing the SW swap, the pinging would only happen on occasion, as far as I could tell.
The day after the install the morning was hot and humid, and yesterday was the same.
It seems that it does go away for the most part after some miles are put on is. I am just being very cautious.
I do have the over ride switch for the fan which I use on occasion. My daily commute which I do take the P-Car a couple times a week, does involve heavy traffic which forces me to use the override switch.
Steve if you remember I had to put the original sensor bracket thingy back in when I put the RennSport chip in which brought the timing back to stock. I run only BP (amaco) 93.
ProtoSport did mention colder plugs when I had it in there for the bracket, and they said the car ran strong. Any insight appreciated.

Joe - I did not check the disti belt.

Hey Carmen,

My car runs pretty terrible on BP gas. Have you considered switching to Shell? It made a big difference for me.

Jay,
I will try Shell or Valero. I'll keep you posted.

SW swap might just be coincidence. How old are your plug wires? Our twin plug motors are very sensitive to bad/arcing wires which can cause pinging/detonation.

My car started knocking and pinging slightly with a chip too, no matter what we did it would still do it, even a full engine re-build. I went back to the stock chip in the end and no problems since.

Quick update.
New plugs & fuel filter installed. Car runs great. No pinging or knocking at all.
Used Valero Gas and prior to changing plugs out, thru some Techron in car.
So far so good....
Will do an aux oil cooler this winter.

Carmen,
Good to hear. I've noticed some pinging during moderate engine loads recently. The weather has been terribly hot and humid. The car came with a Weltmeister chip, so I'm very tempted to swap back to the original chip (which I have). I tend to fill with Shell 93.

I replaced my plugs and caps during the winter, but just recently noticed the pinging. It's a bit worrisome.

Andreas
