Default Stereo installation weirdness-- I think I'm losing my mind

Hey,

My Alpine came today. I took out the old stereo. It had 3 plugs plus cd controller cable, plus antenna. All good. I soldered up the new stereo's harness to the Crutchfield Adaptor, which looks like it accepts 2 of the plugs. Very clean work, worthy of a Porsche. I went to plug the new harness into the plugs... and one of the 3 is missing.

Yes, missing. The bundle of wires w/plug that carries the speaker signal is not in the recess. I can't see it under the dash. I can't see it, or feel it, anywhere in the hole. It's as if it never existed.

It has to have fallen down somewhere. I removed the inspection panel to the transmission hump; no luck, it's not in there that I can see.

WHERE does this bundle/plug route from under the dash? I am trying to find the wires, hoping I can trace back to the end and finish this up.

This is maddening....

BTW I have the CR-1 with the hi-fi system. Doubtless I have other problems as well.

Well, after doing more research I realized the factory amp had to go anyway... no way to power it without major gyrations from this head unit. So I've yanked it out of there and I'm running studio quality wire to the speaker lines there direct to the head unit.

Seat is back in, but stereo isn't. These jobs that seem like they should take an hour on this car always seem to take about 6. I've never had to remove a seat in order to install a stereo in the dash before!

Here's a nugget of info that may help somebody some day:

The wires leading from the amp under the passenger seat to the speakers on a Nokia HiFi system, 1995 Porsche 993, Head unit CR-1, are as follows:

Purple/purple&black wires: Right front speakers.
Green/green-black: left front speakers.
yellow/yellow-black: left rear speakers.
red/redblack: right rear.

There were a number of other wires in that bundle I did not do the speaker-pop test on... hope I didn't miss some tweeters or something... oh well.

Standard disclaimer applies. info offered as-is with all faults. No guarantees or warranties, etc. If your wires are different than mine, tough. Mine are as I reported above.

You might have missed a few....

Here's the wiring list for a 95 with Hi-Fi...

Thanks Clive, I thought maybe the tweeters were on those other lines. But since the output from the new head unit makes no provision for that anyway, it will have to wait until I can buy a new amplifier...

It's in. One last wrinkle: the Crutchfield adaptor is incorrect as regards the switched and constant power leads on a 95 with the Hifi option. I had to cut, switch, and resolder those leads.
