I have just bought a 964, and love it. Wil be keeping it for a few years. But in my hunt, I was looking alot at 993's and 996's which I both can not afford. However, in the UK it seems you can but a good choice of 996's cheaper then alot of 993's. Can anyone tell me why this might be??!
Sorry if this is a very general question....
Thanks,
Adrian

I recently bought my first Porsche, a 993. Here in Florida, I could have bought literally dozens of 996s in the mid-to-upper $20K range. I wound up getting my 993 in California because the weren't any that I wanted here. It's a rarity issue. 996s are everywhere. I might see 1 other 993 a week. Supply and demand...

I was looking at both a 993 95 cab and a 996 99 cab. The prices were fairly close and the 996 had less than half the miles of the 993. After driving both, I felt they drove like totally different cars. The 993 felt to me more like what a Porsche should feel like, and the 996 felt like an expensive Toyota. Needless to say, it is all personal preference.
I agree that rarity has a lot to do with it as well and the fact that the 993 is unique and stands out. The 996 looks too much like a boxter to me.
One of my factors in choosing the 993 as well was that I am betting it will hold its value better than the 996.

Supply and demand. There are tons of 996's on the market right now and not many 993's.
I have found that 993's are definitely more expensive than similar mileage 996's, at least the 3.4 liter ones.

Supply and demand market factors already mentioned are a big part of the
993's value, but there is a historical factor as well. They will always have a
special appeal to collectors because they are the last of the air cooled 911's.
They are a milestone in Porsche and 911 history.

You know, I see this bandied about, that the 996/7 drives like a Toyota. Is that suppose to be an insult? Because Toyotas are probably the most reliable cars on the planet and by reading posts here, no one thinks the 996/7 is reliable. If not, I've never seen a Toyota that drives anywhere near that of a 996/7. If there is a model that drives like a 997, please, tell me which one so I can trade my 997 in for one.
So, anytime I read this statement, I think its absolutely rediculous.

He makes a valid point. The 996/997 is much more refined than a 993 and far less raw.
If you were blindfolded and put in a 993, you would know it was a 993. If you were blindfolded and put in a 997, it might be more difficult to know what car you were in.

I think the correct way to put is this, that it take very little effort to drive the 996, so people describe it as like driving a Toyota. Trust me it drives far from any Toyota I have ever driven.
I love 993s, but I would choose a 996 as an eveyrday anyday of the week. Which is what I am doing in my case, for sure I wouldn't want to drive a Toyota everyday.

I (very briefly) owned a 996, which was my 18th Porsche. I sold it after three months as to me, it drove and felt like a very sporty Lexus.
The 996 is a "numbers" car. It is faster and handles better than a 993. But it is is a sterile, uninvolving car. Just like a Lexus! It is more "GT" and less "sport" than a 993, much like the 928 was in its day.
However...the 996 GT3 is another matter. It is a true enthusiast's Porsche sports car. I wish I could afford one!

This discussion will go on as long as there are those of us who love these cars.
I've lost track of how many 911's I've owned, mostly earlier cars, fun to work on but difficult to make handle like I wanted. I settled on one 911, my 993 C4S.
I drove a few 996 and thought they were great cars, It did feel a bit like a car
that had grown a bit to far from it's roots for my liking so I went with the 993.
It's the final evolution of an original idea, it's got it's faults but it feels like
a 911 and to someone who's had a 911 since 1976, it was a natural choice.
It has some of the same problems earlier cars have (A/C, ventialtion etc.) but
it came closest to my ideal 911.
I'm sure that if you put me in a GT3, 996 or 997, I'd want it. But that's not likely
to happen, I'll keep the 993 and deal with the issues and enjoy the feeling that I get every time I fire it up and remember all of the old ones that are long gone.
It's just a great link to the past for me. For others, that would not be the case
and 996/997 cars are the better choice. It depends on where you are coming from, what you have driven, what you need your car to do. I'm just glad
to be a Porsche owner after all these years.
Have a good Memorial Day!

Possible synonyms for Toyota: appliance, well built, boring, utilitarian, dependable, unengaged.
Not necessarily bad things just not what many desire in a p-car. This from an owner of 993's, a 996 and 997.
