Jason,
Most German makes have the multifunction oil sensor . The primary purpose is to extend oil change periods and so reduce company car running costs.

The down side is the cost of the very special oils that must be used .
A lot of private owners have abandoned the system and gone back to conventioal oil and regular changes !

I think that the VAG + Audi + etc group is the largest group to take on this oil system a few years ago.

When I came across this oil system it looked like a PIA !

Have never needed to add oil between oil changes.
I have no doubt that many BMW trannys last 130k plus but have to believe they would last/function better if the fluid was changed every 50 - 60k mi. Will BMW warranty that transmission past 50K? It's very easy to call something "lifetime" if you're only going to warranty it for 50K.

ZF, the mfgr. of the BMW trannys doesn't call any of their fluids "lifetime", that's only done by the auto mfgr.

Exactly my point. As a poor working stiff that owns cars welllll into their sunset years, I am far more interested in a car's longevity. The ultimate cost savings is NOT having to buy another car ...or repair/replace a tranny ...or engine! But for the well heeled who turn over their cars regularly, "lifetime" promises are a boon since it will save you for the "lifetime" that you own it

Do the Synthetic Oils have lower hydroscopic properties than Dino Oils?
Whenever I lay my boat up, I change the oil because someone long ago put a bug in my ear about moisture absorbed in the oil pitting engine surfaces. I have carried this notion over to the care and feeding of my Porsche. I always change her oil prior to the winter layup.
I wonder if I am wasting time and money with the new synthetics.

Maybe it's just that I'm not hung up on replacing something that doesn't need replacing, it has nothing to do w/ the cost of filters.
I didn't say anything of the kind and I don't appreciate you putting words in my mouth nor taking a negative slant regarding how I service MY CAR

I personally don't give a damn if you ever change your oil or filters as failure to do so on your part will have no bearing on me in any way.

Have a nice day.....ZP44
