At one point I made the mistake of calling Porsche Motorsport (North America) to inquire about upgrade (RS) parts for my 993. The gentleman who took my call informed me that my 993 was obsolete, and they couldn't help me. (Funny,,, they still sell the RS parts in Germany).
For future reference: even before last year when PMNA sold off all their 964 and 993 they never sold RS parts. Those have always been available from a regular dealership. PMNA also does not sell to the general public. So even if the parts were in-stock they wouldn't sell to us.
Hi Jason,
I wasn't actually trying to buy the parts from them, I know I can get a better price from my local dealer or from Sunset, or Viper Bob, or Steve at Rennsports Systems, or ... almost anyone beside PCNA even if they sold to the public. I was just asking for some information, which they rudely had no interest in providing, or even trying to point me to someone who was willing to. I've since learned better, and know who I can trust for good Info.
Falcondrivr,
The sound is not that much louder, but it's much raspier. Had me wondering if I have some sheet metal loose, maybe heat shielding around the exhaust. Next to-do on my long list.
David 23,
I was sitting inside when the rear glass went, so I know what you mean !

Update time. New correct glass came in this past friday, dealer tech installed the glass yesterday (Monday), He'll hopefully glue on the 3rd brake light posts today, and I'll hopefully pay for and pick up my car by the end of the day. Will post with final cost. Tech said he found no evidence that any wiring shorted out, but maybe that the glass had been improperly replaced before. I'll ask for more details on that.
Glenn
Ok, Grand total of ~$1200, which is about $80 over a Safelite quote I got online. Being I saw a lot of older posts saying about $1,100, I guess I'm happy. The only thing the tech found wrong on what was left of the old glass was an aprox 1 inch section of missing sealant. Not sure what problems that would cause other than a leak. He figures that the glass was replaced at least once before as that didn't sound like a factory install.
The only other problem, besides the cost factor, that this has caused me is that now that I've heard the exhaust at speed, I don't like the raspy sound of the stock set-up. Gonna have to start saving my pennys for an aftermarket exhaust system that sounds more throaty ! Slippery Slope !
Glenn, nice to here that this is a close issue for you and that you are back on the road with your Porsche. Thanks for sharing your information on the repair/replacement of your back window.
I fear that my 96 C2 is an explosion waiting to happen. To this day I've never used the defrost.
Same here.
I have a '95 and I remember hearing stories when I bought the car of exploding rear windows. General consensus was something to do with the defroster wires to the heating wires embedded in the glass.
Recently I was replacing my tired old dead rear speakers and I found pieces of glass under the rear speaker deck. Guess my car had the rear window shatter in the past. I think I will avoid using the rear window defroster. I have only used it once or twice here in San Diego.
Scary post to stumble across. Sometimes I regret reading RL... I've had my 993 for about 9 month now, almost all of that through the winter up here. I had to park it outside in the snow when I lived in the projects and used the rear defroster a lot. I do not have the high-mount 3rd brake light though, I have the early basket handle. Seems that the 3rd brake light is the common thread, or maybe they changed the defroster wiring at the same time.
Either way, I'm getting tint put on the rear windows since my kids ride back there and in case it blows I'd rather they not be showered in glass, that would really suck for everyone. So.. now I can justify the tinting of the windows as a 'saftey' measure..
Glad you got your rear glass taken care of. Makes the mysterious explosion of my 964's right headlight ($300) pale in comparison (I'm still waiting on that part to arrive).
