Belt noise?

Belt noise?
I have a '96 993. When driving home from a DE event on Tuesday, I heard a whining noise which sounded like a belt noise whenever I accelerated. It was more pronounced and accompanied by a growling noise during moderate acceleration and was less pronounced during hard acceleration. The belts condition and tension seems fine. Also, the noise only occurs under load. There are no warning lights on. Any ideas what the problem might be?

A somewhat common area for belt whining noises would be the fan belt sensor roller wheel that rides against the fan belt. You may want to lube that wheel assembly up and see if it goes away. Or tie it back out of the way for a test. Search on that one for more info.
I don't think it would create the growling noise though. An A/C Compressor that is getting tired would growl/moan/howl at higher rpms.
Or... and probably the worse scenario would be dying bearings on the alternator shaft.
For what it is worth, I think belts can make things make more noises back there if the belts are too tight. You said tension seems fine, but if they were recently replaced, starting this, then it might be worth another peek.
Hope this helps.
