The SMA connectors I showed in the pictures were used to connect the antenna cable together because it had been sliced through before I got the car. They aren't suitable for use on the radio itself.
Please check that it definitely is ISO Pin 5 that the antenna booster's power lead is connected to. Pin 6 on an ISO connector is used to link the radio's night-time illumination to the car's lighting system. This maybe stacks up with your report that it improves when the lights are on (i.e. the antenna booster is only being powered when your lights are on).

Thanks - that sounds v logical.... think you may be right... (although my booster seems to turn off whent he lights are on!)
