Mine were removed when I had some paint done, and I was told to leave the paint for 6 weeks before putting new ones on. In this short time there was a significant number of chips and scuffs, so yes, I would put them back on!

I appreciated my stone guards after completing a DE. There were cones set up for a slalom excercise and I tried to take them like a skier would..very little turn out around each cone. Suffice to say, I hit a number of cones with the left and right rear stone guards...there are plastic scuff marks on the guards, but the paint below is fine.

maybe next time, I'll learn to turn wider around the cones....

I would replace the old ones. I did this 2 months ago and it really improves the look. I got them at

Default Buff out?

Mine are fine but are hazed. Is it possible to buff to clear finish or just buy new?

I replaced mine with the 3M ones also. Looks much better! A well known Northeast Porsche restoration guru told me that 3M was OEM.

I removed mine over the winter; debated whether to put new ones on or leave it unprotected. After seeing how much different (dinged and scuffed) the guards looked from the underlying paint, there was no question that the new guards should be applied.
Pretty easy to do (easier to remove than to position and apply the new ones, but hey, its a track car).

I'm having mine done right now by a detailer who also does clear bra installations. He said some of his customers insist on the OEM guards, but their quality has not been consistent due to (what he believes to be) sitting on the parts shelf for years until someone buys a set, at which point, they are sometimes less compliant and/or yellowed.
I trust 3M products and one advantage is flexibility in terms of dimension/placement. He has a 993 in the shop right now with the film extending the full distance between the door jamb and the fender well. This eliminates two visible film-to-paint transitions in comparison to OEM for a neater look. I just told him to do what he felt was best after removing the old guards, so I'm not sure what I'll get. I may get back a fully encapsulated vehicle...

Would this mean you will have to crawl in and out the window?

I guess it depends on what kind of car you have. If you have a high mileage daily driver och you think the stone guards look cheap - then just drive until you can't stand the chips anymore and do a respray. I doubt there would be much difference (pricewise) if you compare with oem guards and no respray. On the other hand, if you have a low mileage pristine 993 I would definately go with the guards, and even with the clear bra. In this case, you risk resale value being affected by respray..

This is kind of like the same type arguing as with front respray vs. clear bra. It has been discussed before but it basically boils down to 1. Can you stand looking at the clear bra? 2. Can you stand looking at the chips? 3. Clear bra problems when waxing (waxline around edges) and 4. cost of clear bra vs. repeated front respray.

Would anyone know the lifespan of a set of stoneguards or a clear bra? If its on a daily driver I guess mileage will be the crucial factor (40.000miles??) or is it still age? (yellowing).. 3 years? More? TIA

Thankfully, he did not fully encapsulate the vehicle, so I'm still able to use the doors...
But seriously, the 3M film looks way better than the old OEM guards and he shape he cut out is very similar to the OEM - just a bit larger.

More importantly, when I went to pick up the car yesterday, they were in the middle of a calendar photoshoot for a client (shop) that works on Lambos...and apparently, topless hot chicks Timing is everything...
