Default 993 engine noise (valves?) after winter storage

My 95 993 Cab with 47K miles was in storage this winter (50 degrees) Everything was running great in the fall. When I started it (started right up) the engine has a clicking/clacking noise that sounds like valve lifters or something. I have good oil pressure but it scares me to keep running it. A friend said to just let it run for a while (idle speed) and he thinks it will go away. I want to be carefull and just was wondering if anyone had any ideas? A full 30K service was done at 41.5k at the dealer. Thanks

Let it idle

The noise should go away in a few minutes

It is probably due to the oil draining from your lifter. What you can do to help this is to pull the fuel pump fuse or the DME. Crank the car (it won't start and you don't want it to) in 2-3 seconds burst until your oil pressure gauge starts moving. I think i'll reach about a 1-2 on the indicator. This gets the oil circulating and pressurizes the lifter. Then put back in the fuse or DME. Then fires the car up.

I do this when I first start the engine afer the rebuild.

+1

Not abnormal after a long storage stint.

Many thanks folks. I let it run for a while and it eventually went away. I was nervous based on a previous experience with another car that ended in disaster. I think everything is running smooth now. Thanks again.

I've had this happen too, and its a scary sound. Don't blame you for being cautious.

As mentioned, remove the DME relay and crank car until you get some oil pressure. The noise goes away quicker if run 0-40. No oil debate pls.

I had some major back surgery and the 993 sat for a few month. When I fired it up the valve noise scared me. After a quick search on Rennlist I found this 18+ year old post. Thanks folks.

Is this a great place or what?
