Is there any point to recovering the metal key portion? I unscrewed the thing, and the electrics are, as expected, completely corroded through. Dead as disco.

If not, what am I looking at for a replacement? I have one extra switchblade that still works fine, but can I get an electronic "blank"? What $$$ cost am I looking at?

Whoopsie...the remote is about 150$ from your friendly p-car dealer. They can, however, be a PITA to program. Don't know about the switchblades though.

Sorry about the mishap. You want so save the "metal key portion" for sure. You need to buy new key cap and remote fob (with electronic). Here's the link to DIY http://p-car.com/diy/key . Don't buy from dealer aka. "stealer". Check with Sunset.

Or find a Porsche dealer like Pioneer here in SD that gives a 20% discount for local PCA members and will program the remote fob for free .......ZP44

Good to know. So that I'm educated when I call Sunset, does anyone know what part number(s) the electronics are?

I've been meaning to swap the switchblades out for the lighted key and fob design anyway, I guess this is an (expensive) bit of impetus.

Not sure about part no. of the pc board inside the remote but here're part no. I've known of:

Have you tried drying it, cleaning it and putting a new battery in it? Might just work... I think it would be worth the 5 minutes and $5 for a new battery...

Ouch...I have nightmares about this. I have only one remote and I haven't been able to program additional remotes. Heck, not even the dealer has been able to program it.

If this ever happens to my remote, I might as well throw the whole car in the washer as well. Damn drive-block system.

As one who recently went through this little bit of hell, I highly (and I mean highly!) recommend getting a spare remote and then find a dealer who can program it for you if the p-car.com diy doesn't work for you.

I would take the time to thoroughly dry and wipe off any corrosion from the board. I have washed several types of remotes and most, after drying, will work. The main issue is getting ALL the water out.

I assume that you washed the remote and then forgot about it i.e. electronics do not corrode just after a wash so I assume it sat for a while. If that is the case, you may have done permanent damage.

Snap a pic on both sides and let's take a look.

It'd be pretty comical, if it wasn't so expensive/stupid. The self-inflicted damage manifests itself in heavy corrosion at the battery contacts, along with white cakey residue (most likely the heavy amounts of chlorine bleach I was using to disinfect a nylon bag). I can't even depress the button on the board, as it seems stuck in the metal housing surrounding it. It's perfectly dry. Didn't really realize it was in the side pocket of the bag until maybe two weeks after washing.

I'll take a few pictures for laughs when I get home.

I "laundered" one of mine last year, and sure enough - dry it out, clean the battery contacts, etc. Mine worked fine after that and it still is !

A related question...

If I try to program the car to my newly purchased remote from Sunset, AND I fail... does the original remote still work?

Does that make sense? I don't want to hose myself if I fail. From reading the procedure, I gather that really we're programming the car, not the remote. Does it reset and forget the original remote during the programming process?

I'd love to know, so if anybody knows, please ease my concerns.

GL with the squeaky clean remote key. This is the excuse you were waiting for. The conversion is worth it. Guaranteed you won't wash it again.
