Water condensation, maybe. Depends on temp and humidity, hence its intermittent nature.

Because the engine's cylinders are horizontal, when the piston rings are in certain position oil will seep by during rest, this will cause smoke during startup. I agree w/ Ed that condensation is also a likely cause.

+1 on Ed's explanation
Water condensation is probably the cause

Definitely water condensation...you don't need to worry with the "white" one...is either the blue or the black one you have to worry about!

Try using thicker oil. Let us know how that works for you.

Is the car your daily driver? If not, it's perfectly normal for a car that's been sitting for days (especially if over a week) to exhibit a bit of a puff. If you get it downwind, the smell of oil in that puff is unmistakable, vs condensation which has no odor. And since you are in a cold-ish climate (though I don't know what it's been like lately for you), condensation absolutely is the norm. Good call on the oil weight ...what viscosity are you using now, and how much oil do you consume (e.g 1 qt/2000miles)?

Edward
