"Sweet 3.6," by the Torque Band?
But seriously, folks, it warms my cockles to see all the classic rock still being played. I, too, love Hendrix even though it seems like he's still in heavy FM rotation here in LA. And yes, yes, anything by SRV! Actually saw a band at Antone's in Austin where he got his start. Speaking of Texans, I really like George Strait. Never "driving music," per se, but a great vocalist and craftsman.
While Thorogood was mentioned, my fellow mid-Atlantic boys are remiss in neglecting to mention two of the greatest car songs (and rock songs) of all time, "Born to Run" and "Thunder Road" by Springsteen. Speaking of Jersey, one secret pleasure is playing Sinatra a little too loud when I'm by myself.
Finally, it seems all you '80s metal-heads left out "Heading out to the highway," and "Breakin' the law" by Judas Priest. If you get a chance, give System of a Down a listen. A local Glendale, CA band that made it fairly big. Plenty hard, but clever with a sort of eastern aesthetic at times. Try the last three albums.
