997 shiFter install help
I just installed a 997 shift **** and ran into the following 'speed bumps':
1. There is not enough shifter boot material to cover the larger rectangular hole of the 993 console. I went through the hassle of having the shift ring sewn into the boot and even got it installed. But as soon as I went to shift the lever, there was not enough play in the boot to get it in reverse or even 6th gear. I remedied the situation by getting a MOMO shift boot that has an elastic bottom and I just tucked whatever excess material I didnt need to use under the boot ring and out of sight. Problem solved.
2. The 997 boot/locking mechanism wont turn on the flat 993 lever. Just separate the boot ring from the **** ring and install the boot. Once installed, pull the boot ring up over the lever and then attach it to the **** lever ring. Once you have the slots lined up so they are both goin in the same direction, slide the boot/locking mechanism down over the shift lever and you are good to go.
3. The 997 shift **** has a bigger hole then the 993. Therefore you have to 'shim' your shift lever with something to get a proper fit with no play. I used a few wraps of aluminium foil tape around the shift lever to get rid of the play.
Hope that helps,
Rob

Can anyone elaborate on how to remove the boot ring from the **** ring on the 997 shift boot/**** combo?
