Things I’ve checked: mufflers are not loose, don’t see any body parts/brackets touching the exhaust. Tips are tight. (Also are the tips suppose to be snug against the rear body skin?)

David,
It is possible that the internal by-pass tube's weld broke loose, this is quit common on the factory mufflers. Also look carefully on the exhaust tip pipe where is connects to the muffler canister, see if you notice any hairline fractures?

Also check the heat shielding. There is a piece attached to the inlet pipe of the muffler and then of course the shielding for the cat.
