Default Seeking 993

I just registered on Rennlist. What a great resource for Porsche fans. First, let me ask you folks your thoughts on this car I am considering from RPM:

1997 PORSCHE 993 COUPE

Arena red/black, 10,800 miles, 17” Cup wheels, CD, full power seats, motor sound, rear wiper, seat crests, door sills, rim crests, fresh service with new tires, flawless condition, as new, $51,500

(I can't post the link due to my zero number of posts)

This car fits the bill perfectly for color and options. I wonder about the price being pretty high, albeit the car has less than 11K miles. Any thoughts on the condition of engine/transmission seals with that low mileage? How is RPM for reputation?

Now a little about me as an introduction. I grew up with my Dad owning VWs and BMWs, so I have grown into being a German car buff since my first car, a Bug. I've had several 3 series BMWs (wife's car is a 93 330Xi), and I regrettably sold my 01 530i Jan 06. I have owned an 84 Carrera (my lifetime favorite car) and a 90 964 C4. Now I'm looking for a low mileage 993. My budget is not too tight, but as all of us do, I seek value. I can't help the need for the music that the air cooled Porsches make.

As for my online name, finbully, my fishing habit is sick. Not only am I totally addicted to bass fishing (07 Ranger Z21 Comanche), but I am hopelessly addicted to salt water fishing of any type.

My wife and I moved from Colorado last June to Tennessee and we love it! I am 2 minutes from our neighborhood (private) boat ramp/dock. I have worked in utilities for 28 years.

I’ve been monitoring your forum for a few days and I am extremely impressed with the great information and nature of the participants. I hope to contribute as a 993 owner soon! Thank you for your input to my questions and request for information.

Ray at RPM has a stellar reputation, both in quality of its cars, and the high prices he commands. The consensus is, you get what you pay for -- his cars are some of the best out there.

You'll land yourself a whopper, but you'll pay for it, too.

Well let me be the first to say Welcome to Rennlist. This is a GREAT place. You probably haven't seen even a glimmer of how people here can be, but you will in time. Make the search function your friend, there is a wealth of real info within the confines.

As for the car, it doesn't sound high given the low miles. I would have a very thorough PPI done since the miles are so low, there could be dried seal issues etc....just depends on how it sat and got driven. I don't care for the 17" rims on these cars, but for a no stories, no miles car, you'd be getting a great car.

The value does not seem to bad (prce vs mlg) but may I ask why such a low mileage car. I would dare say you can buy a 60K car far less expensive and if the maint was doen right you still have many miles, mor importantly years of fun to go. I purchased my with 60K and so I felt no remorse putting miles on it. Now getting real close to 90K and loving it.

Sorry dont mean to preach just my 0.02.

You are paying a premium, but it sounds like a sweet 993, BTW Arena Red is a great color. Welcome to RL. Looking forward to some pictures if you get it.

Thank you for the input. To answer 911C2's question regarding pursuing such a low mileage car, I guess I am very picky. I want a stock, no mods car and I intend to keep it that way except for some suspension changes. I want a no DE/AC car and will not track it myself. The car will be a near daily driver for me that I intend to keep for many years. In a nutshell, I want a low mileage car that I can wear out and don't mind paying for the low mileage. I have no intention of keeping miles from racking up.

Any suggestions where I should get a PPI, given RPM's location. Man I'd like to get this sort of car soon!

My wife corrected me her car is an 03 330xi...I fat fingered the keyboard.

These cars can go over 200K miles finbully, youre better off buying a 50K car for 35000 and using the 16K you have left behind to take a money shower! In my opinion youll still have TONS of miles left and the difference between 10K and 50K is really nothing at all. Heck I wouldnt even try to track a 10K mile car because its not even broken in yet. You could take that 16K and buy another 87 911 track car!!!

Default My Take

I really like that Porsche....nice options, good color combo and it is a narrow body with 17" Cups...... Mr Callas in Sealy,Texas can do a PPI.....He is the best per many in Houston

I have know Ray for years.......I think you have some room on the price; based on my past experience.....If you are serious, Ray will likely work to make the Porsche yours

Welcome and Good Luck

Wow - If this is the car you're looking at it's a beauty...

If it's the right car for you, then I'd buy it.

Good luck.

I would be suspect of motor sound on that car as I don't see evidence of it on the engine shot. Look for option code 159 on the sticker.

If you want an essentially new 993, then go for it. Ray was great to deal with when I purchased my C4S from him last year. His cars are exactly as advertised when he says "flawless condition, as new"... just be sure to get a PPI.

Here's another Arena Red/Cashmere, but a 2S model. They were asking $53 (but my comment to them about "high 40s" wasn't met with laughter, so there's room to maneuver), with 50k miles for comparison.

Now if you find an Arena Red with higher miles and a lower price tag, let me know!

Taking the advice of some folks, I am looking at some higher mileage = less costly purchase priced cars. I am considering this car at International Sports Cars, Austin, TX stock #2368 (sorry still not enough posts for me to simpily add the link):

1996 Porsche 993 C2
Type: Coupe
Transmission: 6 Speed Manual
Exterior Color: Teal Green
Interior: Gray
Mileage: 50,729
VIN: WP0AA2991TS322511
$42,500

It is not a heavily optioned car, but it is stock as I seek.

A couple of questions for the 993 group:

Mark tells me the front tires are Conti Sport Contacts 205-50-17 with 80% tread (not my favorite P car tire).

The rears are Yok ES100 255-40-17 with less than 100 miles. What do you think about mixing brands F/R? I have never done that myself. I know I will go through 2-3 sets of rears for each front set but I have always kept them the same brand/type.

Anybody have input on the exterior color Teal Green? I cannot say for sure that I have seen that color but I know Aventurine Green is one of my favorites on these cars.
