I use the mothers polish that came with the ball (sorry not sure of the name I'll have to look). Ive polished my two tone daytona gold/stainless rolex oyster band, my baume mercier semi poished stainless band and my wife's stainless rolex datejust. I'm not sure about 'losing the grain'--perhaps the mothers polish is not that aggressive. All I know is that the bracelets come out sparkling with not much effort
