Default I'm lusting for a 993 coupe...

I'm considering buying a 993 coupe to share daily driver duties with my 82 911SC (gold plated, never to be sold). I'm about to start researching and figured I'd ask for some opinions (yeah, I know - use the search button - I will, I will!).

Want a coupe, 2wd. Don't work on my own car (expert crossthreader). Is there a preferable year to look for (I'm not particularly taken with the advice to buy the latest model I can afford - bought an SC while shopping for a a Carrera 'cause I wanted raw & visceral [same would be preferable in a 993]).

If you'd not feel your wasting your time, sho would like to hear your feedback (can't get the image of that beautiful 993 form out of my mind).

Thanks

I have just lowered the price on my ’97 C4s to 40,000.00 Email me for the details. You may call if it’s easier.

It would help to know a few details of what you are ultimately looking for (such as budget, color, and mileage). The 1995's are sometimes sought after because of the possible SAI issues with the 1996+ years but you are giving up a little of HP and the varioram.

I sold my 80 SC Targa in January, and bought a 96 C2 Coupe. I had my Targa for ~ 10 years, loved that car, ran like a top. as long as it is cared for, will be a great car for the current owner. I focused on the 96 and 97 993s because I wanted a Varioram car. The 95 is a great car, and doesn't have the OBD II, so 95s don't have the nuisance of the CEL as much.

I can appreciate the THEORY of 2 Porsche ownership, and everyone is different, but when we had a 68 912 and I bought the SC, I tried to drive both, but always found myself looking forward to the days I drove the newer car. It solved itself when the 912 caught on fire.

Absolutely agree, the 993 coupe is a beautiful form, my favorite 911, NB, and WB.

I don't know about having 2 daily driver Porsches, I could see a daily driver and a dedicated track car, my guess is once you get a 993, you will want to drive it more than the SC. I know I would, and my SC was a great car, just that the 993 is better in every regard, except I don't care for the ABS, as my SC with big brakes just plain STOPPED! I guess the difference in weight accounts for a lot too.

The two are remarkably similar from a drivers perspective. the 993 has more power, is quieter and more refined, however once you drive it, everything is familiar, the gauges, the handling, the pedals, while newer, it feels like an old pair of jeans....comfortable.

I highly recommend upgrading to a 993, I certainly am very happy that I did. As far as keeping the SC, that is of course your choice, but while I miss mine, I would never trade the 993 in to go back to an SC. Having a coupe, I could see getting an SC or Carrera 3.2 Cab as a different car, or have another coupe as a track car. Incidentally I know my SC has a great home with an owner that is proud to own it, and will take good care of it. I know if I had kept the SC, it would sit and not get driven.

There is no reason to believe that a 95 would be a "better" car than a 98. As the year gets newer, tipically things are improved or left the same. The newer cars of any particular model will likely have some improvements over the previous year (unless it's GM, Ford or Chryco). Having said all that, the newer cars come at a premium. Having said that, many 95 & 96's are "better" than many of their 97 & 98 counterparts because of how they were treated. There really isn't much difference between 97 & 98 so I would say all things being equal, you will pay about the same. A 95 would save you 20-30% and may be as good or better than a newer more expensive example. The newer cars are faster (stock being considered) but if you get a Cab, it doesn't matter much because they are just about as much fun going slow as they are going fast. Cabs aren't prefered for track use. To make a short story, long, it mostly boils down to what you are willing to spend vs how available is the exact car you desire. Good luck.

I was considering one in white of course, but I decided to keep the 993.

Thanks for the quick responses.

My self created set of circumstances, re my SC, is that I knowingly put an absurd amount of money into it right when I bought it with the conviction that this is a stupid thing to do unless resale value is of no consequence because I am resolved to keep the car forever.

Ain't gonna get rid of it.

Soooo... most important to me are basic sports car qualities (sans frills and creature comforts) and dependability. The 993 that I'd like would be that year which would most closely relate in character to the raw and visceral personality of my RoW SC (again, the reason I stopped shopping for Carreras when I learned about SCs).

Varioram maybe isn't that important to me. Reliability while being hard driven (but won't be tracking it) is what I'm looking for.

May sound crazy, but I'd be very happy if my SC were rebodied to look like 993, but I ain't gonna go there...

If it helps get my preferences across, I put 74k miles on a '99' 6spd C5 Corvette hardtop that was a rocket off the line, but I quickly overdosed on rocket launches and was bored stiff with the car for most of the time I owned it. That's why I sold it and bought my Euro SC - to get back into a "sports car" as I define it.

Default Well IMHO

A '91 or later 964 is close to the 911SC, then followed by a '95 993....have owned them all except my first new SC was a 1981....great car

Any 993 is fine, I had a '98 C2s....loved it too

Good Luck...get out there a drive a few

I put 80k kms (55k mi) on my 89 Cab and loved every one of them, never "bored". I only replaced it with the 993 because I couldn't keep both. There are things I already miss from the 89 (for one, it was black!). There is a trade off but I agree on the looks and the extra power makes up the rest. If I can only own 1 Porsche (and that happens to be the case), it will always be a 993 Cab. The 993's all feel essentially the same. They are not as "RAW" as the older cars.

First, if you want a coupe and will consider a white AWD and/or like red, i think the two cars presented here are sweet. you will quickly start to think about the mods they have already done but you'll pay as you already learned.

If you've already got a coupe and are looking for a daily driver I would suggest you look at the Targa. it makes a great daily driver, you can get a '96 and not break the bank(Low-mid 30's?), but it will give you something different than the coupe without having to go all the way to a CAB (and without the 'challenge' of the old removable roof targas).

if I were in CA and looking for a '2nd' Porsche besides my coupe it would almost certainly be a CAB or Targa

Default Exception to the Rule...

Al Z, I don't like red or white cars, but yours and Jordan's from Mind Over Motosports are the exceptions. Beautiful, beautiful car. Just curious...what are those side skirts??
