Not to hi-jack a really great thread, but...

Before any asks... YES, I searched. Cowtown has inspired me to finally get off my duff and upgrade the system in my 993. Being pretty handy with fiberglass (due to years as an R/C Aircraft builder), I am thinking that I want to create "new" boxes to replace the plactic Nokia boxes that I currently have in my hi-fi system.

Question is, does anyone know what size speakers currently "fit" into the plastic Nokia boxes? Specifically, what size are the midrange drivers? What I'm thinking of doing is buying a 4" set of Focal separates and a 6.5" base extension kit and mounting both the 6.5 and the 4 in the new fiberglass "box" that I construct. Then I will create a new tweeter mount, granted not completly stock looking, that will mount in the same location as the factory tweeter.

I'm planning on powering all this with a new Audison amp (LRx6.9) and I really think the imaging will be better if I get the tweeter up near the factory location.

So... Does anyone know the approximate size of the drivers that are in the Nokia hi-fi "boxes"?

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Colin,

Thank You! Thank You! Thank You! That's exactly what I was hoping to find out.

I think I probably can make 6.5" and 4" drivers work... I'm going to try, anyway! If I'm successful, I'll post pictures. If not, you'll never hear me speak of it!

Colin, just a random question...

What are you doing with all of those little transistors or FETs in the photo?

Are you building your own amplifier? Or is it for another project?

Those are for (click-->) building a 993 Code reader.

No, that's my gum.

I like doing the work myself. That's the racedeck tile in my home garage. I've heard great things about Rod Birch, though.

I just had an absolutely killer system installed. I'll start a separate thread with pics when I get them. It wasn't inexpensive but I'd venture to say it's one of the best sounding 993s on the planet...

Are you also going to fabricate a subwoofer box? IIRC in older 911s there was sufficient space above the front passenger footwell for a subwoofer box and I've seen some pretty clean installs with a well hidden custom box placed there. I'm sure if you were to do this, there would be sufficient interest here to buy a few

Colin,

Which model Audison do you plan on using? Will it drive all four speakers? Are you going to mount it under the seat? I was thinking of using a LRX 5 mounted under the seat to drive four speakers. The extra channel will allow an upgrade with a subwoofer if I want more bass in the future.

Does anybody else have this set-up? Will the LRX 5 fit under the seat?

Thanks.

You may want to use 2 smaller subs instead of 1 big one for ease of installation. In that case you may want to take a look at the JBL 6 channel GTO with configurable filters.

If anyone knows of an old Phoenix Gold ZX 450 for sale for cheap let me know.

David,

I hadn't contemplated that space as an option for a sub... Was planning on doing something like Rod Birch's rear footwell boxes. I'm traveling overseas right now, but I'll certainly take a look at it when I get home.
