I am searching for a silver crest as well, but looks pretty expensive on ebay.
How much did you get yours? I would really like to change my cracked one.

I paid ebay price from the dealer. It was $150 + tax, the parts guy gave it to me for $100.

I cleaned the ISV today. It was a little bit painful to get it out but it is not too bad if you have 7mm wrench with extension to loosen the bolt in the back.

The cylinder did not move before cleaning but carbon cleaner made it movable again. The idle appears to be smoother. Highly recommended and easy DYI.

Before taking it out, how would one know if this needs to be done?

I think it's typically if your car has a rough idle or stalling issues.

I think also if it hunts around for proper idle rpm after coming off the gas.

Sounds like a good jobbie for the weekend. I've been tinkering with mine for close to two months now, so I might as well have a go at the ISV. What did you use for cleaning agent ? Toilet duck ?

I tried toilet duck but the angle on the spout is wrong for an ISV... carburetor cleaner spray works much better.

Okies, I'll go get a can tomorrow, thanks. Pretty much the only thing left to do. Bar the Fabspeeds that should be coming this way, of course.

Carburetor cleaner spray from Walmart did a good job on my ISV. It came with the "straw" which made it easy very easy to apply.

How the heck do you get that sucker out if you have Varioram? I started to pull it (luckily all the hose clamps were accessible) but it became pretty clear that while I might get it out, I was going to have a hell of a time getting it back in. So I left it alone for now.

Also, mine was sitting loose in the metal ring on top of the Varioram, I'm assuming it's missing its gasket.

I had to kinda wrestle it out of there. There's an aluminum pipe that needs to get moved out to the side. Read up on p-car.com there's a great DIY there.

i've been having an unstable idle for months now. i typically have the unstable idle on cold starts and it slowly goes away as the car warms. if i start the car again warm and drive normally, my idle climbs to 2-3k rpm and remains. if i engage the clutch in gear, the idle will lower until i take it out of gear and disengage the clutch where the idle will settle . this cycle will continue sporadically unless i clean the isv.

i clean the isv and the problem goes away for about a week...sometimes three or four. then, it happens again.

do i throw in the towel and purchase a new one? is this the source of my problem?

i figure it's worth a shot (especially considering a fellow rl'er has one for cheap he is willing to sell) but i would like to consider or be aware of any other problems i may have.

any thoughts?

AB,

Do you find engine oil or residue in the ISV when you clean it? My old RS America (with nearly the same intake as your '95) exhibited similar idle behavior because the PO had over-filled the oil, resulting in a nice puddle inside the intake manifold. I spent a few hours pulling the intake and cleaning out the oil... weird idle went away for good. Just a thought...

Cheers, Mark.
